| Lower temp fan switch hey everyone I'm new to this forum, I've got an 01 RC and I've been doing some homework on finding a lower temp fan switch.
Well I believe I have found it, commercially available for just 27 bucks. I am ordering one, and it should take about 3 days to get here. I will let you guys know how it works out.
It screws right into the radiator where the old sensor went, its just about exactly the same shape and it turns the fan on at 190 degrees.
more to follow. |

I'd rather not spend $$$ on carbon fiber radiator shrouds that may/may not help while stopped |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch the unit will be here tomorrow around noon, and I will be plugging it in and testing tomorrow once I get all my cowls back on.
The fan will turn on at 195, then back off as the temp drops through 185
There's really no reason it's not going to work, I just dont want to get anyone else's hopes up until I can defintely say 100% it works. |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch It works! It was 103 here today, and it is still 97 outside and I just rode in traffic and the bike ran constantly at 185.
ok, here is everything you need to know. First of all, the switch must have a metric 16 X 1.5 thread, thats what the stock one is. At the car parts store there were a lot of them with this thread pitch, I selected the one that looks exactly like the stock one. Some of the ones they had were just too long.
So the one I am using is a Nissan part number 21595-01A00. You can call any parts store and give them that part number and they will cross reference it. So I went to Autozone, they had the cheapest price. If you have an autozone then go down there and tell them you want a SW524. Thats their part number, and it corresponds to an 83 Nissan Pulsar.
First picture - the stock one is on the left, it has one blade connector and it finds its ground through the radiator threads. On the right is the new one, it has 2 blade connectors and you will need to make a little ground jumper wire.
See the second picture- you just need one female blade connector, a little wire and one ring terminal.
Third picture- there is already a ground wire attached to the radiator mount bracket on the left side. Take out the bolt and add your new ground with the other one and crank it down.
Fourth picture- here it is installed. Just hook up the ground jumper to whichever is easiest, and your stock wire blade connector to the other one. You can see in this picture that the oring that they gave is too big. It is pooching out from being tightened. It leaked just a tiny bit. So I put some teflon tape on it and then get a smaller oring. Or use a flat rubber washer like the type in your garden hose. If it wont quit seeping, then put a little permatex on it.
I may be trying some other units as well to see how they work
Give it a try guys |

for years been trying everything from removing left fan, reversing the the polarity on the right, engine ice, fins.lets see if i can get this right already. |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch remember guys mine is an 01, single fan on the left. Any variances between model years should be looked at.
If you guys can, verify that your temp switch has M16 X 1.5 threads. You can do this at a good hardware store that has pitch gauges. |

I bet the switch is the same on that bike. 16 X 1.5 seems to be the standard thread pitch for these things. |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch hmm, something different. I looked at an 02 and there is a temp SENSOR (not switch) in the thermostat housing. And it has a fan relay..... so I'm wondering if the sensor goes into the engine computer, and the computer turns the fans on by using the relay? |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch well if mine were an 02 I would be out in the garage pulling cowls off. We need to find out if that is a switch, or a sensor. I am downloading a SP1, SP2 manual right now, and I am going to check the wire diagram on the 02.
If a switch could be put into that housing, then the switch could be wired right into the relay and control it. |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch ok, heres the sucky part for you sp2 guys. You all should have bought an sp1! no just kidding.
But on the sp2 there is no thermal switch. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fans by the temp reading off the temp sensor at the thermostat.
Here's what you can do though. If you want a switch to turn it on manually and just let it run, then all you need to do is have the switch provide a GROUND to the black wire that is going into the fan control relay under the seat. You will then be manually controlling the fan, plus it will also come on automatically still if you forget to turn it on.
If you still want to rig up an automatic fan temp switch, then thats going to take a lot more R&D. There are plastic housings available on ebay that you can splice into one of your crossover hoses, and then install a temp switch in the housing, and have IT provide the ground to the black wire on the fan control relay.
did that help anyone? |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch no theres a simpler way. you have to trick the ecm to thinkin the coolant is hotter then it really is on a sp2. so lets say the coolant is at 185, the new sensor tells the ecm its at 205 and turns the fan on to keep the temps around 185
something like that |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch its gonna take more than a midnight post for me to cut into mine...i am closer to an electrician than electronics tech...i am interested in this tho...
yesterday, temp was under 80 but my bike got to 212 in 12 miles home from work. manual would work for me if easy to access...like under tail, as long as it comes on when I forget as well for idiot protection...how loud is the fan or how much power does it take from bike? Any detriment to leaving it on with ignition so as to run all the time? |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch i dunno I read the PC maual and it says nothing about temps.
its mro elike putting in a diode to boost the current, which makes the ecm read
for example, .8 volts says 200degress, then the fan turns on, so put a capacitor or whatever in there so if the voltage reading is .6 volts the cap boosts it to .8 thus turning it on sooner? |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch splicing a wire, from the black wire on the fan relay, to a toggle switch, and grounding the switch, will let you turn the fans on manually.
i just thought that juttos method was for an sp-2 as well.
guess i bought the wrong year right?(NOT) nice find though |

| Re: Lower temp fan switch yep guys, sorry about that. The sp1 has the temperature switch that controls the fan.
The sp2 is controlled by the engine computer. The only way (right now) that I can see is for you to install a little switch on your panel that will ground that black wire and turn the fans on manually.
This way they will run when you want, and the bike wont get over 190 degrees. You will still have the automatic function as well.
yep, you should have bought an 01 |
