Re: Lower temp fan switch

I used to have an old Ninja 900 and they were known to have bad fan relays which were expensive to replace. So I just wired my fan into a switch at first and could turn it on when ever I wanted to, but then worried I would forget so I just wired the fans into the headlights so if the bike was on the fan was on, and I never had another problem.

Re: Lower temp fan switch

you need a smaller oring, maybe your old one is reusable. Also I used teflon tape on the threads.

next time I come to colorado springs we'll have to meet up.

For sure.

Not to jack the thread, but do you have an opinion on whether its safe to have the radiator repaired if it springs a leak? Thats what I'm considering for cost effectiveness.

those radiators are aluminum, so whoever welds it must use aluminum welding techniques.

Re: Lower temp fan switch

just went for a long ride yesterday, starting at the valley floor it was around 100 degrees. Climbed up a steep mountain pass up to about 5500 feet. During the climb it only rose up to about 205. then once I leveled out at the top it went back down to 198 or so.

later in the day back down in traffic at the stoplights it stayed between 200-205.

I really think the secret on this bike is to just get the fans to come on sooner and not let the temp get up to 218 (stock setting)

Re: Lower temp fan switch

NICE.

Did you notice any other changes to how your bike ran? (cooler = more power etc.)

Also what mods or add-ons do you have on your bike?

Where did you ride? Lake Hughes?

Re: Lower temp fan switch

I rode HWY 168 up to Shaver lake. The other time I rode up to Bass lake I had the old temp switch in and the bike was alternating back and forth between 218 and then down to 205 as the stock switch would open/close with temp. I never really got it hot enough to see a power loss.

They say optimum combustion is around 190 and thats about where it will run now.

Now this morning is was very cool outside, and one the freeway I was running 175f.

hey next time I'm in SLC I will drop by to see you.

Re: Lower temp fan switch

For any of you guys that have done the fan switch, or the lower temp thermostat, have any of you reversed the direction of your fans?

I know that it has been discussed before, but the stock fans pull air through the rads, it would seem to me that if you were doing anything other than stop and go, it would be more effective to have the fans pushing the air through the radiators. There has to be some speed when the fans are working against the airflow created by the movement of the bike and therefor not being effective at cooling the bike.

I know that you can reverse them by doing something with the wiring inside the fan motors themselves, but there might be an easier and more effective way. I know that the guys on the vfr forums (vfr's pull air just like the RC) have been swapping out their fans for fans from the vtr1000 superhawk. I guess they are only about $30 each and fit right onto the fan motor without any problems.

Re: Lower temp fan switch

I guess if you're moving along then airflow should cool motor below fan cut-in temp. Here in Singers its usually at least 85F and 100% humid... but gets much hotter. Now that I've fixed the radiator leak, i run about 190F at highway speeds, but up to 210-220 pretty quickly in traffic. Fitted a manual fan switch (exactly as jzanutto describes) and use on hotter days and in heavy traffic.

I should check mine just to see what direction it's blowing. I have never checked it.

I am picking up two VFR Fan Blades from my local stealership today and they should bolt right onto my RC fans. The pitch is reversed so that they push air out instead of pull it in.

B.Miller you mentioned reversing the motors, you dont need to do anything inside the motor, just cut the two wired going two it and switch the leads. That will reverse the direction that the motors blow.

I am also trying a cooling system reroute today that I paid a guy on eblah for and will let you know how that works too.

I am toying with the idea of ceramic coating my header pipes as well as making my own fan ducts since it is so hard to find them anymore.

Is that what that guy on ebay was selling? Plans for rerouting the radiator hoses?

Re: Lower temp fan switch

I would have to check. Can you see your radiator? Do you have a temp switch like the one in the pictures that I took?

Since its an 01 I bet you have the same switch setup as the 01 RC51.
