| Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! I bought a 03 RC51 today with a salvage title. It needs a lot of work, but most importantly, it needs a KEY! What are my options?
New ignition? Which bikes are compatible...
Locksmith?
Hotwire?
I desperately need to know if the bike runs. I have already found almost everything on Ebay to make it roadworthy again, but it does not have a key.
I do not want to sleep tonight until I have a solution. But if I can't find an answer soon and I keep downing beer, I'll be digging around with wire cutters touching wires together til she cranks! |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! Yup would say that ebay is your friend and take a look for a new ignition setup for her. Probably the easiest way to do it. I do know a few guys that have talked to locksmiths and got them to make keys, but lets just say you have to be pretty good friends with them. |

Ok, found a solution for keys, buying a new lockset with gas cap, ignition, and trunk on ronayers.com or bikebandit.com for about $160. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! i believe there may be a number on the lock set that a key cutter can use to make you a key. i know there is someone here that regularily gets called into the dealers to make spare keys and he says there are codes to them. No clue where or how he figures it out though. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! MACI4LIFE is right, sometimes you can take your VIN to the dealer or if there is a serial number on the ingition switch itself they can send it off, or maybe to a locksmith and have them make you a key without having to replace everything. And not to mention probably a lot cheaper. |

I'll be using this thread to report on my resurrection project. Estimated cost of total project is $4k. We'll see how that goes in the coming weeks.
Parts and prices so far:
Salvage title 2003 RC51- $2000
Air duct A- $85.14
Fairing stay B- $75.40
Case assembly upper (guage lens)- $62.30
Lock Set- $153.94
Subframe- $205
Total so far with shipping: $2606.78
Still need fairing set, front and rear wheel, tires, exhaust, right headlight. If anyone has these parts laying around, please let me know.
At this rate, my June 28th Trackday at VIR might be on the RC51 instead of my beloved Superhawk. |

Dont go spend $160 on a used setup. take the lock cylinder out of the trunk down to a local lock smith. It shoud have a 5-6 digit number on it. With that number, they can cut a new key that will fit the Ignition, tank and trunk for less than $20. Been there, done that, saved enough money to buy 20 T-shirts. Please dont waste your money. And BTW slow down and be patient, or your gonna find yourself spending way too much money!
PS If you need instructions on how to remove trunk lock cylinder, let me know |

In the likely event that you've already paid for a ignition cylinder and gas cap, you still have a prayer for saving money. After installing the new parts(used or whatever), take your old ignition, gas lid and trunk lock to a locksmith and have it keyed. Should be less the $20. Then put it up for sale on ebay or here or whatever. Some impatient guy will need it and pay $160 or so before exhausting all his options and you'll have made enough doe to get other parts. |

I think that is easier than just replacing everything, cause if you lose the keys again, then you are left doing the ignition, gas cap and seat lock again. Plus the vin cant be used for locksets anymore because of the replacement. took me a hundred bucks. |

Pretty decent deals on all things OEM. From what I cross-referenced, the prices are better than bikebandit.com
What wheels bolt onto RC51's? All years? Any other models? |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! Got an email from the dealer today, he thinks he may have found the key. Looks like I'll have a NIB lockset on Ebay this week.
Does anyone know if Sato Midpipes will fit MIG cans? Trying to piece together some pipes.
My front wheel has a bend on both sides, in different sections, not bad, holds air. Could I fix that? Or just run it? Or trash it? I'm trying to get a set of wheels, but that could take a while. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! Just got back from the shop and the frame is welded- $25! And that's with a $5 tip! Some good guys down at Beaverdam Auto.
All the parts should be in by Saturday minus the right headlight- still haven't bought one.
I got the key from the dealership as well, unfortunately everything is torn down and disconnected so I don't know if it runs.
Total project is right around $3500. Just need headlight and front tire.
Anybody know how to put these things back together? My girlfriend will be helping me tonight- she just doesn't know it yet. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! You can take your ignition switch out and on the side of located next to the steering lock pin it is a #. Mine is 5GNA09. Not really my number just kidding! The Honda dealership will use the last three numbers to cut you a new key. I just had mine made yesterday. Good luck and ride safe. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! I have a full system Yoshi with carbon cans (lowsided) so the right side has some rash on the edge of the can and the midpipe. It also had carbon fiber heat sheilds and the right side one shattered. Other than that it is a nice system. I was going to post it on E-bay. I am looking for $250 or so plus shipping. |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! Patiently waiting for bits and pieces. She is waiting quietly. I keep finding little things wrong. Like my headers got a little bent I guess cause all my midpipes are hitting the swingarm on both sides. I could start putting the fairings on, but I still have to put the undertail on when it comes in a couple days and the headers. Plus I have a track day next Saturday and the RC51 might be coming with me so I may have to change the coolant out. Its so close but still I wait wait wait... |

| Re: Salvage RC51 Rebuild Project with No Keys! She's done! I took her to get gas this evening. The headers were bent and the new ones I got came with midpipes that fit my Superhawk 2Bros cans. There is still some work to do like put the undertail on but I'm waiting for the paint to dry. And I'm missing some windscreen screws. Once all that is done and she gets a bath, tags and insurance, I'll be rocking a $4k RC51 with 9k miles! I estimate around 50 hours of labor and probably another 25 hours of "shopping" time. It was all well worth it!
So where's the RC51 club in Virginia? |
