Question about getting off top triple tree clamp

OK so my bike was in an accident and at some point the top triple tree clamp kind of bent. The forks went up a little and the parts of the clamp that goes around the forks went up but the center around the steering stem nut stayed down. So now I'm having trouble getting it off. I've taken the steering stem nut off and the clamp bolts off each side. Did I miss something or is because its bent its gonna be a bitch to get off. Should I try to slide the forks off?

Re: Question about getting off top triple tree clamp

thats all you have to loosen, but yours may be pinched cuz of the accident or whatever. You might have to give it a pop with a rubber mallet or something from underneath. You will need a new upper triple

Re: Question about getting off top triple tree clamp

if it's even slightly bent, and since it's probably never been off before, it's going to be a real bitch. I would recommend pulling the forks down, because that tension is most likely causing the problems.

You really should pull the forks all the way out anyways, there is a good chance that they could be bent too. I did the same exact thing when I bought a wrecked R1. I was only replacing the top triple clamp because it had really bad wear from keys and crap. But it was barely tweaked and was a total bitch to get off. AND the forks were bent, but I couldn't tell until I had them completely off the bike. I had ridden it around for a few months and couldn't tell that they were bent before hand. They were VERY slightly bent and it would have been really hard to tell that without removing them.

To get the forks out just pull everything off, and get a good grip on one and start twisting it back and forth while pulling it down. Make sure that you loosen the bottom triple clamp nuts ALL the way, as you loosen one, another will tighten up, so make sure they are all loose or just pull them completely off, same goes for the top.

If you still can't get them out of the top triple clamp, it might be easier to whack them down from above, instead of hitting the triple clamp from below. Just be careful and don't **** 'em up!

Re: Question about getting off top triple tree clamp

well, if you have another one already, don't be afraid of the ole hacksaw method. The tree is already trash, so just cut the clamp part 180 degrees away from where the clamping bolt is. this should allow it to slide right off. just be careful for the fork. you don't wanna cut into it.
