| I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits I'm looking at some of the kits they have on ebay because I recently wrecked my bike and am just wanting to replace everything on it with something like a repsol or maybe just a replacement one thats plain and do my own.
Something like this for example: eBay Motors: Honda VTR RVT 1000R RC51 RC 51 SP1 SP2 SP 1 Fairing (item 360063651026 end time Jun-28-08 04:08:36 PDT)
My biggest question on this is how would you mound the headlights in the front fairing? It doesn't come with the mounting tabs and thats something that you can't just transfer from the old front fairing I wouldn't think. (doesn't matter because I dont' have any of that anyways).
So what do you do? It says its for the street? The race bodies just are one solid piece so not sure what to do on this? The front fairing new cost alot and rather just buy it in this kit. So anyone know on this? or dealt with this personally? |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits I've thought the same thing when I was rebuilding my 01 RC. But like you pointed out, it claims that there is no mounting tabs for the headlights. What the hell would the manufacturer think will hold the headlights in? Theres a little guide stud on the back of each headlight that the snorkel recieves, but thats not enought to hold the headlight during normal operations. If you drill a hole in the fairing, I can only guess that it will come all the way through to the front side, but like you also pointed out, the lights wouldnt be set back far enough. I dont k now what to think.
I hope someone who's delt with this responds, as I would like to know for future references.
Good luck N3D! |

They say they supposed to fit perfect but read otherwise on another forum..lol I don't know but sure don't want to pay arm and leg for OEM stuff..lol |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits Have you checked for used stuff on ebay. If your patient and are willing to fix something that is rashed, you can probably get some used stuff for cheap. I seen an upper that had damaged but had been repaired that went for right over $90. The lowers go for pretty reasonable too. The worse part is the shipping. |

I was thinking about just buying all new stuff and doing custom paint or get one of the race schemes off ebay...I just don't like waiting because bikes are seasonal...lol |

Perfictly acceptable....in Hong Kong. Why do you think it's $400.00 for an entire set of painted bodywork? Cause it's a facade. That's why. Nothing more than a front to hide what's behind it.

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits Also, that "fiberglass" material that it says its made out of is actually PVC....with a little bit of fiberglass in some places. I bought a set like this for my 954, and after a few hours of riding, it started to melt at the bottom around the exhaust. Got all warped and everything. So i just bought OEM fairings of Ebay one at a time, and im going to paint them myself, but in the same paint scheme. In my opinion, its worth the extra money... |

Tell me about it. The heat on my inner legs is somewhat irritating. Good thing I can afford to lose some weight. |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits Stay away from them Chinease Fairings... Ive heard many a story of people buying them, and them not lining up. You will hear the "odd" case where everything was perfect, but I can't trust them. OEM fairings all the way.
How bad are your fairings? If they are cracked, drill and use cable ties/tie wraps - It will be like stictches (used to do that when stunting in my teens - smashed many a set)

The left side cracked in the corner where the opening is for the rad, but i pushed it back and you can't even see it. Other then it being scratched its in great shape. The biggest issue is the front and rear. The front whole left side is ripped away, taking out the headlight and everything so nothing to stick together on that and rear the whole end of the tail snapped off and the cowl seat cover thing all the screws ripped holes into it and sheared off the lock for the seat..lol
The end pieces are the worst things on teh bike, everything else is in order adn thanks to a Chum on here I should have the functionality of the bike up to par this weekend if the parts get here, just need the body parts and a new headlight. |

I try not to be a squid and wear pants all the times but when I'm making a short trip to my friends house (under 3 min away) and I've rode the bike recently to have it heated up, it just about takes off my leg hair! lol
Good thing though is pants fixes that and if its cold out you will be warm! I rode a 50 min ride in 40-50 degree weather at night on interstate doing about 70-80MPH and never got cold really, while my friend was on his ZX6R freezing his butt off..lol |

So anyone know on this? or dealt with this personally? | If you buy one of these kits then there are some options for you. first you can buy some fiberglass body filler and using a form of some sort (you can make one out of a paper towel roll cardboard center, just cut it to height and then slit the side to adjust it for diameter and tape it back togther) attached to the approximate location you need it to be. Then fill the form with the filler (dont forget to mix in the hardener) and let it cure. The form should be large enough for you to grind down a little for fitting and give you enough room on the top to locate the best spot for your hole. Once you have ground it down for shape and finishing then I would paint it black to blend in better (just the new fiberglass) and then drill your holes for the screws. You can either drill it out and glue in a threaded sleeve or just drill a hole and use a buttonhead screw to thread right into the fiberglass.
Keep in mind that when you are doing final fitment that you have to account for height of the tab as well so your headlight sits flush.
I do know that Piteck offers fairings with the tabs already in place but they are only primed fiberglass. one other option though.
GOOD LUCK and post some pics when you are done.

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits I bought a set of the Repsol Chinese Ebay farings a couple weeks ago. I figured that if they sucked then I could use them at the track at least. The fit is pretty good, had to mock up a couple brackets for the side farings, but overall its pretty good. Paint looks great, and they are heavy, so the PVC plastic comment CBR954RR is probably right. I'll probably wrap my exhaust to be safe.
The headlight issue is pretty complex to think about, and you need to think about how to deal with it for a bit to come up with a good plan. The Fiberglass comment above is probably best, but I've never used it before. My idea works like this......
I'm using 1/2 inch PVC caps to replace the mounting points on the upper to hold the lights. Filling them with epoxy and a nut on the inside, to make a tight fit. Mount them to the headlight, and cut the angles appropriately. Epoxy them to the upper, remove the headlight from the new mounts, and paint it all black when dry to give a finished look.
I'm out of town on business right now, and plan on doing this when I get home next week. |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits Any updates on your fitting Brett?
I've often looked at these fairings kits on eBay and have been tempted but never bought one for the reasons stated above. It's surprising that they don't include suitable mounting points for the headlight. It's not as though they're making the fairing for race purposes otherwise it wouldn't even have a gap for the headlight. This auction linked below is a fairly standard 954 fairing auction, you can see what might be a headlight mount tab on one of the pictures.... eBay Motors: HONDA CBR954RR CBR 954 RR 02-03 954RR CBR954 FAIRING NR (item 270269612455 end time Sep-06-08 21:30:00 PDT) |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits I also bought a set of Hong-Kong plasics a couple of weeks ago for a 06 1000rr. They didn't line up quite right, but they will work for now. The paint looks good, but my lowers are starting to chip on the corners already. The OEM screws will not always work. I am also thinking of wrapping the exhaust. |

| Re: I have a ? about front aftermarket fairing kits There is a reason why OEM pieces cost so much: exact fit and quality materials, proper engineering, and nice shiny paint on top of all of it
If you're fine with just the shiny paint part, then buy the cheap-o crap, otherwise, just buy or fix (or both) oem pieces and get them painted however you want |

I have the plastics on the bike, and they look good. Had to do some custom work, but nothing major. You can see the step by step on my blog here...... Haven Enterprises LLC
There is also an Eyebrow Mod I did listed there as well. Hope you find this helpful, and let me know (PM me) if you need any further info. |
