Need help setting up suspension on 02 RC

Hi, first post, I picked up an 02 RC-51 a couple of weeks ago. The previous owner was a big guy, like 200lbs plus. I'm a little guy, roughly 160lbs and the suspension on the bike is INSANLY stiff. Bike is very squirly at lean when the road is no perfect and even on the straight it feels like it wants to throw me off on bumps. My kidney are hurting for riding, lol

anyone can suggest some suspension setting for my weight?

Re: Need help setting up suspension on 02 RC

hmm, ok well go slowly.

first make sure the dials are set in synch with each other. count the number of turns In clock wise for both rebound and comp for the forks the rebound just turns doesnt click, the comp clicks. count full revolutions for the rebound and then back it out to where it was make sure where ever the pucnh mark dot stops when in all the way you use that as your starting point. IT DOESNT MATTER if the two rebound marks look uneven form fork to fork. as long as the rotations are the same they are synchd

do the same on the rear shock then bring the setting back to where they were. (make sure to write them down).

once thats done try this...

turn the comp on the bottom of the forks down 2 clicks(counterclockwise), and turn the rebound on the top up one revolution clockwise(in)

i take it the rear is stiff too. take two clicks out (counterclock wise) on the comp on the TOP of the shock and go one full turn in on rebound on the bottom.

Re: Need help setting up suspension on 02 RC

I was in your situation. I could not generate any sag with the stock shock...none. I had that big fat yellow spring backed off to zero and yet the rear would not drop a mm when I got on.

I bought a Penske 8987 Triple Clicker and OMG what a difference. On top of lowering the bike over an inch, the handling is now out of this world good. Without any hyperbole, I shaved 3 seconds of my lap times of 1:12. I can now drag a knee with high rear sets, and I even had the rear step out as she settled in on the swing arm sliders, at lean angles I'd only read about!

The RC51 is so awesome and predictable, I was able to pick it up off my knee and continue riding with little more than a load of crap in my leathers. I love my RC51 now that I have a proper suspension.

More to come...at our weight, the Race Tech fork spring replacement with a set of .95's will blow you away too. It give even more feel to and feedback from the front.

Don't forget to suck those forks up in the triple clamps if you lower your rear with a shock replacement.

Bottom line, you will NEVER get that stock shock to do what you need. Spend the $1000 to $1200 and get a better shock.

Penske, Elka, Ohlins, Hyperpro etc. all make great shocks matched to the rider.
