2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

Ok this is my 03 RC51, I have tried to run as many test as I can to check and see why its not starting. I have checked all the relay switches as well as the starter motor. The battery was checked at a local autozone and they said theres nothing wrong with the battery (its about 6 months old). The video shows a fully charged battery and still the same issue. If anyone can help with any advise please let me know. THANKS .....

I have a video of the sounds my bike makes ..

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

I think you should just trade me for my 954....... At the end it sounded like the fuel pump kicked on after you let off the starter I am not sure about that??...... The fuel pump kicked on. Ok do you have spark, just grab the plug and take one for the team, if not is there a kickstand switch? I got screwed on a ninja that way one time. It should be fairly simple change the plugs for new ones if you have spark and see if it fires. If not test the fuel pump

I think theres 2 ? Im not familiar with the spark plugs ... The kickstand switch seams to be working fine as well .. Thanks

Im not sure what is exactly wrong with your baby..but, I can help ya with the spark plug issue. Front plug is very easy to get to. Sorry for the generalized location with the arrow, but thats where it is. Second plug(black and white pic)...not as easy. Involves a bit of time to get to it if ya dont want to scratch things up. Hope it helps ya!

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

In the video id say that the bike isnt starting because of the battery being toooo low. B4 that had you had the bike apart at all? Heard the pump so we know that you would be getting fuel as long as the lines arent all messed up. Give ur battery a full charge and try it again.

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

That was a full charge ... The battery seams to drain a little after each failed start so its becomes weaker .. The battery is about 6 months old and I had it check ... It was fully charged b4 that vid ... ill check the fuel line as well

mrdave25 Thanks the pics .. it helps alot .. Im going to check them out now .. and post what I find .. THANKS

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

I think its the CDI computer .. Does anyone know how I can check it ? .. While I was checking the spark plugs I noticed the wires for the ignition switch was striped exposing the wires (Rubbing on each other and shorting) as well as the hi and lo beam wires .. I have replaced all the wires and Im still having the same issues .. could it be the computer, is it fried ? Thanks for all the help

I agree with Rokitt51, that battery sounds flat. I know that if mine goes like that i have no chance of starter her. I bet the display resets itself every time you push the starter as well.

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

No help on the ecu but If it still sounds the same with a new battery then I would say it's a wiring issue not the ecu. Does the gage reset itself after a few times starting it? I think you have a bad ground because the battery seemed weak in the video.

Some one correct me here I'm no RC51 expert but if the starter relay is fine the starter should crank the motor over faster. Can you jump the ciliniode (I can't spell) does it crank over at the same speed? I just would hate to see you drop the money for a new ecu.

your short probably just fried some other wires in the harness. I have been through that nightmare before.

Go through and check all the lights as well make sure they are all working right.

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

The fuel pump cycled because the battery didn't have enough current to spin the engine, as if it was very low.
Probably same reason the ECU cycled (via the gauge display).
If that's a new, hot battery, then either something is sucking the life out of it quickly, or it's straining to spin the engine for some reason.
Have you jumpered the service connector to check for any ECU fault codes?

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

I am voting starter. The battery sounded low so the starter doesn't spin (nothing to do with the ECU) Generally a starter on any vehicle needs juice and bearings. If you got a fresh battery I am assuming that it is fine. That leaves the actual starter and cables. Make sure the connections are snug and clean. Also check the cable for any visual indication of an issue. I have seen cables on cars corrode on the inside of the insulation with no sign but it was rare. If the cables are clean and in good shape they should carry the current needed to spin the starter. So the next thing would be a starter that binds due to worn bushings. Don't go grabbing parts do some debug as these items can be verified without spending $$$$.

FWIW I have a dying battery in my RC (got a lighter one ready for track season ) and it sounds the same. Thus my thinking you are not getting enough amps to the starter or it is binding.

Good luck I hope this helped some.

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

Im getting 8 blinks of the F1 light which I believe means TP sensor or TP connections ( I havent jumped it as of yet should I ).. I dont know how to check the TP sensor or if that would have anything to do with the starting problem .. I just d/l the wiring diagram for this bike as well, Im going to TRY and check the ground wire but Im not sure where to begin. Or what I should check (I have some wiring backround but its for houses not bikes)

Battery doesn’t get hot (If thats what you were asking)

The reason I believe it could be the ECU is b/c this all began when I had my bike parked for the winter, about 2 weeks ago my Scorpio alarm goes off at the garage .. I run to see what happen .. It seems someone hit the back of the bike with a large stick (VERY HARD, and broke the tail where the ECU is located. The stick was on the floor next to the bike) That’s when the starting issue began. I’m almost 90% sure the ECU was hit (service manual says something about NOT TO DROP it or it could become damaged) .. I got into with the garage owner about it but he did nothing about it .. I moved from that location and I have been trying to figure it out since then .. I have even tried to jump the bike with my dads car as well with no luck .. Would the ECU control the spark plugs? She sounds like its missing a step or 2 in the staring process ..maybe the spark plug ( Im pretty sure there good to just dont know a SAFE way to check ..

For my FIRST POST on a forum EVER i would have never guessed I would get so much help ... cant thank you guys enough =D ..

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

At the beginning you said your bike was an '03.
The ECU was located at the rear on the '00-'01's (or SP1's).
On the SP2's ('02-'06), Honda moved the ECU under the rider's seat alongside the battery.
However, under the rear cowl, at the rear, are four relays.
On the left, there is the Turn Signal relay and the Bank Angle Sensor relay (at the most rearward).
On the right side this is the Fuel Cutoff relay and the Cooling Fan Control relay (at the most rearward).

If the Bank Angle Sensor relay was badly damaged, then the bike may not start even if the engine was turning over quickly.
However, the relay itself can be checked by swapping it with a similar on, such as the headlight relay.
It's handy that Honda chose similar relays for various functions.

The ECU controls everything from an engine operation standpoint, although not directly at times.
The Converter Unit is the unit that sends energy to the coils and to the plugs.
It just takes it's orders from the ECU which is told when to send the command by the ignition pulse generator sensor behind the alternator cover.

Re: 2003 RC51 WONT START HELP !!!

I havent had this problem on a bike before, just on older cars; If the starter motor has worn bushes, and is a little off center, it can cause a quick discharge of the battery, and will wind the engine over slower than normal. If you have a new battery thats fully charged, and cant find any faults with the wiring, it might be worth looking at that.

On car starter motors, the bushes are usally copper or some other soft metal, and I think most auto electrical shops can change them over. I am just not sure of the set up the RC51 has.

Good luck with it anyway. Cheers
