Not really - He is talking about mileage with "these" and since we are in the fireblades forum....
The hawk he is referring on the heat output.
Yep - bored to tears....
Anyways - my '03 954 gets the light on at around 130-140 depending on how hard I drive it. Just a slip on. |

| Re: gas mileage? My buddy has had his Superhawk since '98 I think. He loves it but it does suck down fuel quickly (so did my RC51). You'll be lucky to get much over 30 mpg. Better look for a gas station around 100 miles.

100-115mi per tank.
Heat is a LOT less than on the RC. Just worry about crashing the radiators on the hawk and not about the heat they put out. The RC is hotter because it's fully faired, the hawk gets a good amount of air, even when sitting in traffic. (Most likely that's why hawks come with only one radiator fan)

| Re: gas mileage? Since I started this thread I guess I'll have to clear up the controversy. I already have an 03 954, so I am familiar with the mileage; I was referring to the Hawk.
And as far as heat output from the 954, it's nothing compared to an rc. I rode a buddies rc all around daytona during bikeweek and it felt like I was sitting on an oven, and the mileage was terrible as well. I was hoping the hawk would be better in both areas, but I've already dealt with a bike that gets 100miles/tank and I ain't goin' back unless it's for the track. Thanks. |

Take a hawk for a ride. You just might find yourself likin it enough to deal w/the mileage issue. I still have my 98 and an RC now. Love em both, wouldn't trade `em for anything (except the hawk for a motard).
Ask yourself, how many times have you ever found yourself more than 100mi from a gas station? |

It's not how many times have I been more than 100 miles from a gas station; the question is how many times have I run out of gas? I don't care if I'm 1 mile from a gas station; I don't like to push! I'm not knocking the bikes; I was just hoping it was possible to get more like 120-130. I could deal with that. |

| Re: gas mileage? Well that explains everything, it's the red tires!
I must be one of a few people to get at least decent mileage on a hawk. I think, that by the time I actually run out of gas, I would probably be at the 140-150 mark. It's probably about 125ish before the RLOD comes on.
Oddly, the RC gets about the same mileage and the idiot-informer comes on going downhills at about 115ish...
Did you ride the RC outside of cruising Daytona (guessing based on prev. post)? If you can get free of the congestion and keep it running above ~50mph it'll run cooler. |

And the thing that drives me most batty about these mileage posts is the reference to: "Well, I get "such and such" miles before my reserve light comes on". What I want to read is MPG, not some irregular statistic as "when my light comes on", which could obviously vary from one bike to another.
Ah, there, I feel better already...

Which is why it's important for people to give thier mileage info, because it does vary so much from bike to bike.
Maybe the guy who re-jetted my bike did a better job than someone elses mechanic and he get's worse mpg than I do? Octanes are rarely mentioned in these types of posts, maybe there's something to that?
Does it make a difference if the information comes from real/actual riders or a magazine? The magazines only get one or two mules vs. ten or fifteen riders (heh, yeah, right) posting thier mpg. |

I assume you aren't heavy on the throttle all the time? I did ride the rc around outside of the congestion, and yes when you are moving it's much better. But, it gets so hot/humid here during the summer it would be unbearable. I was on a ride a few weeks ago when it wasn't so bad but the guy on an rc was complaining. He looked like he'd been in the sauna. |

I think the hottest part while riding the RC is my feet cause my boots are waterproof and dont breathe. |

I do love that motor though. Who needs revs when you've got instant power?! |

| Re: gas mileage? This is as good a topic as any for my first post .
When a guy builds the SH engine with heavier cams and dials in the jetting there's a sweet spot at cruise speed that would allow up to 150 miles per tank . Problem is that 4000-5500 sweet spot is not where we ride them at most times as far as interstate travel goes .
Honda should have built a smaller airbox which would have allowed for more fuel in the tank .
A good fix would be to mod the underside of the tank for more capacity and run w/o the top of the airbox on . It will breath hot air but these motors kinda do anyway . |

| Re: gas mileage? The heat is no where near a RC-51 my good friend I ride with every week has one and I ride it alot, personally I like my SH better it has almost the same power and is alot more comfortable, but not as good looking in some ways, I like my Blue one better then his old Nicky Hayden Looking model, I dont like the Red, black, yellow, and silver much at all. I like the newer darker ones. |
