| Post-jetting issues. So I've just jetted my '98 Hawk with a Factory kit. K&N filter, TBR cans, everything else stock. 182/185 main jets, clip 4th position down from the top, float unchanged, mixture screws 2.5 turns out. I thought that was it; seemed to be running great, as I put it back togethter, synched the carbs and let it warm up and ran it through the rpm range. I took it out on the road and it pulled hard through first and second to redline. I let it drop to 3k rpm in 2nd to see how it'd pull and it hesitated and started to die. As I pulled over the idle dropped to 900 rpm and I couldn't get it above 2k without killing it. Now if it sits for a minute it'll start up, idle at 2k, drop to 1200, and die, all in about 20 seconds. I thought perhaps it was a fuel delivery problem, but there are no kinked lines, everything seems to be in order. I'm too damn tired to start tearing into it, but does anyone have suggestions?

| Re: Post-jetting issues. Is the petcock turned on? I go for the easy one first
Not familiar with the VTR, but if it is a vacuum operated petcock, make sure the hose is connected. Otherwise look for a plugged filter, fuel pump (do they have one?) not working/plugged-in, or maybe some debris in the carbs.
It really sounds like you are just getting a little fuel to the bowls, and that is whay you were probably running on originally. Good luck. |

This would be my first suggestion as well. Always start out simple and small when looking for problems. |

| Re: Post-jetting issues. Did you leave a rag in the airbox, or on top of a carb when you put it back together? What about the fuel tank vent lines? Are they pinched? |

| Re: Post-jetting issues. You may have slightly bent a float bowl adjuster tab when you were doing the upgrade. Since it's a twin, I would at least check to make certain the tabs are both in the same relative position.
Too high and the carb will vent fuel, too low and the float bowls can't keep up with the motor. |

| Re: Post-jetting issues. Oh man. Thanks, all, for the suggestions, but it turned out to be something even more bone-headed.
One one hand I'm glad it was something simple, on the other, I hate feeling this stupid. To make a long story short the friend who'd helped with the jetting had attached the vacuum line to some tab he thought was the appropriate connector on the fuel tap and though I disconnected and re-connected the hose several times I didn't pay attention to the fact that it was not attached correctly. It wasn't until I flipped the tank over to examine the fuel tap that I realized this. Duh. Won't do that again. |
