Sick Thunderchicken

I have a 1998 Thunder Chicken that I am just short of having to take to the shop. A little history, I blew a reg/rec in April and not wanting to put a stock one back on to do the same thing, I purchased an Electrosport aftermarket one. This reg/rec is much larger with cooling fins and it uses Diodes to trun excess volts to heat, not dumping volts to battery ground like the Honda version. Well I ran the batt a little low tryingto crank the damn thing with kill switch off (what a stupid accessorie) and on the ride home burned another reg/ rec. Now without going into long detail the stators are prone to having heat issues where wire can break and under high heat conditions cause the stators to try and keep up with loads therby using the rest of the working windings with higher voltage. Diodes hate Hi volts so that is what happened to second reg/rec. So I ordered new stator and they gave me new reg/rec all is installed and charging fine (well 13.9 @2000 rpm and 13.6 at 5000) The point is I had the air box off to change plugs and new K&N and when I ran it it works great untill it comes to temp, then it start to cut out like it is droping the front cly. I can hold my hand over right pipe and willl not burn hand, removed air box to verify all connections and all look good changed front plug it is not wet or fouled and bike runs good and starts good cold. I put stock air filter back still no joy. I sounds like it is running lean but it is kickn my but in the trouble shoot department, any brainstorming would be greaty apperciated

Leave a stereo on in the garage overnight playing the kick assed music of that uber-band INXS. It will be all better in the morning.

My Superhawk is way louder than my mothers Ford Thunderbird thus in my circle of folks the scoot is the Thunder Chicken (spoken in my best foghorn leghorn voice)

You may want to check all the wire and connectors between the REC and the stator as the wires have a tendancy to melt when the other parts go bad.

I was going to say that the K&N may have been over oil and foul the plugs but you covered that stuff already.

Yes I am gonna replace the flag connectors on the reg rec with new ones and solder and heat shrink them and chek all other elec connections as well as verify all vacuume carrying lines as still having integrity...after that if that does not work I will burn my autograghed picture of Keven Schwantz and throw menstral blood on it (the bike not kevin picky, it already has the previous on in)

Seems I am going through the same thing at the moment, Had to completely rebuild the engine after it siezed a while back, over 100k now, ran well for a while and now is having problems with missing and surging when I lean into a corner and give it a bit, I have had it on the Dyno several times and the guy who has been doing the work on it thinks it is not the carby's so guess it will have to be down the electrical path as well, also have a k&n air filter with jetting kit and after market staintune exhausts.

Seems like coils, with spark plug leads and new spark plug caps has cured the problem

My '00 yellerhawk has recently **** the bed. Bought it used with 22k mi, and after about 2k mi, my rear cylinder has begun missing really bad. Un ridable at the moment, I've cleaned carbs, checked float, swapped plugs and coils... I have ordered the cdi and converter box's from e-bay and if it fix's mine maybe I could send you what I don't use for some plug and play T/S. Even my bad one could give you a positive answer if it changes from your symptems to mine... then you at least know what to buy...

Thanks, but the bike is still going ok at the moment, might be a bit far to start swapping parts anyway, California to Adelaide Australia cheers Nick
