Engine chatter/ 2nd gear slip ???

Hey all, newb here.
Bought a 99 this past summer. Couple questions on it.
Since I got it, the engine chatters a little off and on idling at lights, or when rolling the throttle easy from stop above 2500 or so. Is this common? Could it be CCT? Any other ideas from a lame description?
Also, 2nd jumps out, and is getting worse. Had 20,000 when I bought it, now has 36,000. Is this also common, or am I the victim of an abused bike that someone has banged the hell out of 'cause they lived 10 mins from the Dragon and ran it regularly? I'm getting ready to tear down and redo/ custom paint. It's been laid down a couple times. Just wondering if these problems are common with the Hawk, or just mechanical bad luck and should only be a one time fix?
Thanks for any help!
