| wtb, I think? Howdy all. I've got a suerhawk based 'streetfighter' which more or less runs fine and only needs a tune up, but I keep thinking it would be fun to own an injected motorcycle.
I'm wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what it would cost me to buy an injected superhawk motor, and/or if a RC51 motor would fit and what the differences would be. It's not exactly a pressing need, and I'm not just looking for the most horsepower I can stuff between my legs, I already have a 200+ hp bike and just plain don't need another one.
But I DO like the idea of a bike that doesn't mind temperature swings, has no choke, etc, and like I said, I just want to try something injected.
-Abe.
P.S. I could sell off the motor I've got to recover some of the investment, there's truely nothing wrong with it, I'm just looking for an easy project after all the ridiculous cars I've been workin on lately. |

| Re: wtb, I think? The RC51 and SH only share 4 engine parts in common. You would basically have to transfer over the entire RC motor with ECU/Brain. You'd also have to covert the SH fuel tank from gravity feed (carbureted) to Fuel injected (fuel pump).... It's a HUGE undertaking. You'd be better off to sell your SH Streetfighter and buy and RC51 and strip it to street-figher status. |

| Re: wtb, I think? A little work doesn't scare me, it's the cosmetics that worry me more than anything. Throwing a motor together is no big deal, and on cars I've done severl motorswaps along with some frame fabrication, etc.
But it's good to know the motors aren't the same. I'm not really after the extra power, so an injected (99+, I believe?) SH motor would be fine. Any idea what to expect to pay for a motor out of a trashed bike? Do they phsyically fit in the same place?
Thanks!!
-Abe. |

| Re: wtb, I think? ALL Superhawks are Carbureted. So if you want fuel injection, you'll have to go to an RC51 motor, or Suzuki TL1000 R or S engine (or V-strom/SV1000)
Or use MegaSquirt - Electronic Fuel Injection Computer by Bowling & Grippo * * ©2005 and cobble together your own setup.
Just wondering, why do you want to move to Fuel Injection? When done right, even the BEST FI setups equal carburetors. When done wrong, they are much much worse (hence all the reviews of new FI bikes with lean off idle stumbles and lurching at freeway speed). It's very, very very hard to equal the simple carburetor (as all the new bike problems show).
It would be much easier to simply tune your current carburetors to fix any fueling/running problems you may have. |

| Re: wtb, I think? Really? Wow - I had no idea. I thought the SH went to injection like a year or two after my bike, which was the inspiration for the whole thing. I figured it would just be a straight drop in, and that there would be a good supply of motors from folks who wrecked their bikes.
I've been debating running a megasquirt on my turboed KZ1000, but I don't want to ruin a great running SH. :-)
Really, I just need to dig into the carbs. The PO had "upgraded" things at random, the air box is full of holes, the jets are "different", the exhaust is "custom" etc... And it's got flat spots, gets like 20 mpg, generally doesn't run like it should. While I know it's only a tune up away from running right, I just thought it would be a good excuse to dig into an injected set up.
Thanks for clearing that up. Now my only concern is where to find a "low fuel" sensor since mine's bunk. :-P |

| Re: wtb, I think? Hi there,
Is there anyway of running fuel injection on the sh? just wondering myself. Also what mods have you done to the current engine and how much power?
Cheers |
