Can I change the gearing in my shaft drive Honda?

I realize that this isn't the correct forum for a Honda Shadow, but you guys probably know the most about shaft drive bikes.

Working with an '83 S VT750 Shadow I have built a trike by removing the Honda front fork and building a frame to attach to an old VW Beetle front axle beam. This "car" has two wheels up front with a steering wheel with seating for two and the Honda drive train.

My problem is that when, after many hours of construction, I was finally able to go for a test drive, it seems like first gear isn't low enough. I really have to baby the clutch to get rolling.

I only rode the bike about 50 miles before beginning this project and didn't notice anything really out of the ordinary. Does this bike just lack in low end torque? Is there a way to change the final drive gearing? (now I wish that I just used a bike with a chain - lots easier to change a sprocket) Is it possible that even though it starts and runs smoothly I have a big synchronizing issue with my carburetors?

I hate to abandon the project at this point with so many hours invested, and hope that there is a Honda wizard out there with a good imagination.

Thank in advance!
