CBR 929RR LED Instrument Cluster Change Tutorial

Here's a tutorial I made to assist in the changing of the LED's in the instrument gauge cluster of a 00-01 Honda CBR 929RR. I decided to make it a PDF document for easy reference during the mod. (Requires Adobe Reader to view)

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Re: CBR 929RR LED Instrument Cluster Change Tutorial

Excellent tutorial. Wish I could have look at it a couple of weeks ago. I got the kit for my girls (Elfqueen) 600RR. I couldn't believe the BS involved with removing the speedometer. The only thing I could add is that I used two forks to remove the needle. I put one fork on each side with the two middle prongs of the forks under the needle. I used even downward pressure on both forks and the needle popped off. Spoons work well also we learned after we didn't exactly place it at zero and had to pop it off again. She did nearly all the soldering. At first I was pretty intimidated by this project but it wasn't that as difficult as I had first thought. Now she is offering to change out all of my friends bikes L.E.D.s. Not something I would want to do again soon but it looks really good and is unique. Rep coming to you.

Re: CBR 929RR LED Instrument Cluster Change Tutorial

I hope you accounted for the different forward voltages and currents that different colored LEDs have.

When I did mine (changed to blue, 3.8V Vf) i had to trace the board out to find which LEDs were in series and which resistors were being used for current limiting and proper voltage settings.

Going down in Vf (red is one of the lowest usually) it may work because you'll just be over powering the resistors slightly, but if you leave your resistors "as is" and what a green or blue (usually higher Vf) your resistors will drop too much voltage and not allow your LEDs to fully illuminate.

If you guys really want me to get down to the specific parts and equations I can, let me know if you want me to.

Also, you dont need to take the needle off the tach face. The two screws on the back of the plastic connectors for the tach allow the whole tach to come off as an assembly. Just saves a step...

Other than that good write up!

I got mine from Digikey. There is an American and Canadian website. Just Google "Digikey" and then search part #475-2760-1-nd. They have excellent prices.

I am about to do the same mod but I am using white led's and I am purchasing the same tach face plate. And that is a great writeup. Can you post a pic of the tach in daylight?

I will take one tomorrow and post it. The only thing I don't really like about this tach face is that the redline isn't very easy to see. Although I'm sure everyone knows where the redline of their bike is so it's not a big deal. I would have preferred that the redline section have a red bar over it instead of having the 'ticks' tinted red but for the price it looks awesome.

Do you think if I placed a red led where the red line is it would help at night? I want to have all the rest white with a red needle but the redline area fading from white to red.

The red led might not be necessary because the redline ticks are tinted red. I think the red led might cause it to look like the redline is closer to 10k but it would definitely make it easier to see at a glance. I'm not sure exactly what it would look like because my whole gauge is red. You can always give it a try and test it before you get it all back together.

White led's might be quite bright at night depending on the led brightness. You should also change out your signal indicator led's while your at it. I should have done that when I had mine apart.

I attached a picture of my cluster in the day time. Let me know if I can help you out any further.

What kind are the signal leds? Or how can I find out?

It can be rather tricky to determine the voltage and current of the led since it blinks. It's a 5mm led and I would assume it would either be 3.0V or 5.0V and around 30mA. You might have to buy a couple of each and give them a try. I would think it would be 5.0V 30mA but that is only a guess.

Method #1: You could use a multimeter and try to determine the voltage but you would need an expensive one that senses changes very quickly. Just touch one lead to one side of the led and the other lead to the other side of the led. You will probably have to do this on the back of the board while it is plugged in an functional. You can also try to determine the current by breaking the circuit. De-solder one led and set the multimeter to read current then touch each lead to each connection on the board. This method probably will probably lead to poor results.

Method #2: I determined the voltage and current of the backlight led's by taking one off the board and putting a known current through it with a power supply and resistors. I increased the current bit by bit until it lit up properly. I then increased the current until it blew up and took this as an absolute maximum. The proper current for a led is more important than proper voltage.

Hope that made some sort of sense.

Here is mine before and after
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abWAgArgck0

I used 1350 mcd white led's they are a clean crisp light at night perfect. But the whole process is a pain in the a$$. I have one question though after it was all put back together my tach needle is stuck at 4500rpm until I turn the key off. Any ideas?

Does your tach needle move when you rev the bike or is the needle completely frozen at 4,500rpm? If the 4,500rpm is what the tach goes to when you turn the key on you need to take your needle off again and place it at about the 4-5 o'clock position. Then push the needle on half way and carefully rotate the needle back over the stop pin and push it on all the way.

When you turn the key to the on position the needle should not move off the pin. Make sure that the tach is showing that you are idling at approximately the same position as before the mod. It took me about 4 or 5 times to get the needle back set properly.
