| Re: New girl looking for some advice! Sway, welcome to the .org. I'm one of the UK members, and would recommend you have a look at the Bikers Oracle site on the subject of how best to get tuition and the technicalities of UK rules and regulations on what you can ride. Here's a relevant thread you could start with: http://www.hondavfrclub.org/forum/sh...light=Learning
That site is probably better equipped to find good Scottish riding tuition and advice on passing your test.
This group can then give you all the advice you ever need on Hondas or Fireblades when you get to that point. Remember also to check out the financial issues. If you already have some points on your license and you want a sports bike on passing your test, you'll need to have checked out the insurance costs beforehand. The cost of a year's comprehensive insurance can equal the purchase cost of a second-hand bike!
Hope you find all you need to get you safely onto two wheels! |

There was a couple of posts recently from a guy named Big G from Aberdeen, you could find him in the members directory.
So take the long term view, start smaller, learn all you can, and when you're ready, there will be plenty of 'blades available.
And almost all of these bikes mentioned are faster than a Ferrari to 60 mph.. | |

| Re: New girl looking for some advice! Welcome to the forum! I'm a Gunn, we're a northern highland clan. I'd like to get back to the homeland someday to see the Gunn museum.
I tried to get into the Scottish Games but I refused to go commando under my kilt, so they gave me the boot! Hey, I need some support, what can I say...
Ditto what everyone else is saying: go with a smaller used bike that you won't care about if you toss it down the road, and spend the money you'll save on some good leathers. |

Originally Posted by Sway So how much should I be paying for a decent set of new or second hand leathers?? | Sway, again if you onto the Bikers' Oracle site and search, there's lots of threads on there about clothing and pricing in the UK. Sizing is critical, so read a few of the threads, go into a local dealer / Hein Gericke type store and try a few on for size so you know how they feel.
Everyone here would recommend you to get leathers (and in the UK a rainproof oversuit), plus you need leather gloves, boots and a helmet. All this costs a fair amount of money, and a dealer will often do a combined offer with a bike for a new rider because he makes more margin on the clothing than the bike. If you can find someone no too far away with second-hand clothing, bikers often change leathers because of matching bike colours rather than wear and bargains can be had.
Good luck . |

But since I am American, if I get caught cruising around in a skirt with no undies, I will most likely receive a good ass-beating! Maybe if I get to Scotland one day I'll give it a shot... but it gets kind o' cold there doesn't it? Shrinkage is bad.
I'd look for a decent set of second hand leathers, a good brand with some armor. Also, try ebay or the net for some closeout goods. I got a set of honda racing leathers that way, brand new for $200; retail is $800. I read some of the british bike mags and it seems stuff there is slightly more expensive, but get the best you can afford; it will be cheaper than a skin graft. |

| Re: New girl looking for some advice! Yes, don't let my first "big bike" experience be repeated.
I was licensed for a 250, and yes, I was capable of riding larger bikes (but not according to the law) anyway, borrowed a friend CBR600F3 (current model at the time - 1997)and went for a spin around the block. As I went to turn right after stopping at a stop sign, I saw a car take off from a parking spot out of the corner of my eye, I grabbed a handful of front brake, and with the aid of a bit of gravel on the road, dropped my mates bike at about 0.3 mph. damage involved about $600 worth of fairings and levers.
With the extra experience a few more months of riding my 250 would have brought, I would have been better able to control the brakes, and focus more attention on the road rather than trying to ride a bigger bike.
the moral of the story is, it's better to get the crappy mistakes out of the way with a bike that doesn't cost so much to fix. and if you manage to avoid the silly mistakes altogether riding a smaller bike, then you will be the better rider for it.
Z...

With the current US to AUS conversion rate it would take about 2,000,000 Aussie .org members to make your statement true. Last time I checked, there weren't that many on the org. Plus, Zee only counts as a fraction as we all know he's not entirely all there to begin with. |

| Re: New girl looking for some advice! Welcome aboard.
CBR400rr would be ideal...wish they had more smaller bikes like that in the states.
That's your first investment...the 2nd and more important is gear...DO NOT GO CHEAP ON GEAR!!!! When you fall...yeah...when not if, you'll be glad....don't get a textile jacket. Get the best leather jacket w/ CE armour. ...and don't go cheap on the helmet either!
Good luck to you! |
