| Hi from California - researchng 954s and 929s Hello from California.
I'm searching for a great bike and have been doing alot of research. My budget is around 7,500 and I have a choice to make. A new bike ala the Z750s or zzr600 for around that price OTD or a 2 - 3 year old low mileage bike that I dont think I'll want to sell and buy up in 6 months for the same price, that costs the same. Well, I think my choice is obvious, a 2002 954 with 43xx miles on it for 7600 out the door with a few nice aftermarket accessories from a reputable dealer.
The reason i joined this site is to dig for more info. I've already been to all the usual suspects, ie yahoo and google searches, powersportsnetwork.com, sportrider.com, motorcycledaily.com, etc. etc. If anyone can help me make with more suggested readings I would appreciate it. I need to be sure, because I'm just starting a business and this will be my only form of transport (other than my wifes car). I dont want a cage, I'm extremely claustrophobic and I need the smell of fresh air. Thanks for any tips and suggestions in advance. |

Have you already committed to that bike, because that price sounds a little high. You should be able to do a bit better if you shop around. |

| Re: Hi from California - researchng 954s and 929s no, I havent commited to that bike yet, but according to cycletrader.com, thats a reasonable price for this bike in my area. I've also shopped on craigslist.org in the Sna francisco bay are ( where I live) and the less expensive bikes have some type of damage to them. I'm also a bit concerned buying from private parties as I am relatively new to motorcycling after a 20 year hiatus. My current steed is a cruiser. (I've take the MSF beginner course and read all the safety / riding tips in all the major publications.) I've ruled out older low milage bikes like the RC 51s - due to the fact that I'm a bit cautious not wanting something too powerful. The 954s and 929s seem to have a bit of a 2,999 RPM "margin for error" if I twist the throttle to quick. I dont want to flip over and have no desire to do wheelies. My reason for seriously considering the 2 different CBRs is because I like the agility and the ergos seem compatible for long runs through the sierra nevada mountains, which is the most enjoyable past time I have evr experienced. |

If you whack the throttle open, the 954 will put you on your ass. For a sportbike, though, the ergos are pretty comfy. I have a 929 and I've done 300+ mile days on it with no problem. You've been riding so it's not like it's your first bike or anything. Just be respectful of the throttle when you first get it. Welcome to the site! |

| hmmmm maybe I need to take another look at my RC. J/K. The RC is much less likely to toss you than the 929/954 as it is a lot heavier and has less power. It also builds revs slower than either of the inline 4s and is very forgiving with a decent and relatively linear power curve. Having said all that, the RC has a bit more aggressive ergos and I certainly wouldn't want to make 300 mile days a habit without a different seat and higher bars.

| Re: Hi from California - researchng 954s and 929s Have you considered a VFR? more forgiving than a 'blade and more comfortable for your commuting duties. '98-'01 are your best bet; they're common on the used market and very reasonably priced. |
