| new to the site.. 600 or 1000? new to the forum.. hi all. im from melb australia. only ever owned a nsr 250.. but thats gone after an accident..
havent been riding for about 6 months but looking at getting a new bike in the next 6-8 weeks and cant decide between a 05 600 rr or a 2002 954. some people ive spoken to, old sports bike riders who dont ride anymore, have said after a few months on a 600 you'll want to upgrade to 1000 so you might aswell just skip the process and get a 954 straight up.
but then on the flipside ild like to get into some track days which would seem like the 600 would be the better suited bike..
any feedback would be appreciated... |

| Re: new to the site.. 600 or 1000? Considering how lightweight the 954 is, I don't know how the 600 would have an advantage over it for track days. It would simply come down to the difference in power. |

I went from a zx2r to a 929, now on a 954, if your sensible the jump is easy but just remember one thing, respect. Respect it and you'll be fine, their alot easier to ride than a 2 stroke thats for sure.
Where in Melbourne are you? I've picked up a couple of nsr riders recently in the Frankston area (picked up re:ambo) |

For a trackday newbie, the 600 has it all over the 954. For a street only scoot, I'd got with the blade. |

| Re: new to the site.. 600 or 1000? g'day and welcome....we have a lot of 600 and 954 lovers here. Choose the one that fits you best. Is price a factor? Besides, it doesnt end after the purchase of the bike, theres exhaust, tuners, rearsets, etc, etc, etc...ENJOY! |

| Re: new to the site.. 600 or 1000? The 600 is just about as fast as the 954. It's down on torque, but makes up for it elsewhere. On the street it's nice to have the little extra torque, but not necessary. Be warned, the 600 likes to rev and be revved....it will make you want to go... |

Coming from a high revving 250 the 600 would probably be more fun for you as you'd be able to rev it out more and ride it harder than you would the 954. I doubt you'd get bored with the power of the 600 too quickly. Just take it easy for a couple of months - things can go bad very quickly on any bike capable of over 100kph in 1st gear in about 3 sec (something that both the 600RR and 954RR can easily do).
Oh, and I can't see why the 600 would be better than the 954 on the track. I doubt it would be quicker in the corners and it sure as hell wouldn't be as fast on the straights. |

I guess lighter, faster, quicker, more powerful and waaay more torquey, is just not enough to keep up with a mighty modern 600. My poor old 954 is obsolete.
Seriously though, it's all about the rider unless we're talking about world class riders. Both bikes have more than enough performance.

The chassis of the two bikes are very different. The 929/954 platform is inferior to the new "Unit link" 600 and 1000 platform. The (lower) inertia of the moving parts inside a 600 (especially the crank) allow the bike to be turned more easily.
There's also the fact a 600 is plain easier to ride on a racetrack. |

| Re: new to the site.. 600 or 1000? Funny how the magazine tests and race results show that most 1000cc bikes are faster round tracks than their 600cc counterparts (eg. R1 vs R6, GSXR1000 vs GSXR600, etc.).
The 954 was never very successful on the track firstly, because it was down on power compared to the other (true) 1000cc bikes and, secondly, because Tado Baba, the Fireblade designer made no bones about the fact that he designed it a road bike - not a race bike. The RC45 and RC51 were Honda's race bikes during the Baba Fireblade times (900, 919, 929, 954).
The 954 is a bit too nervous, flighty and wheelie-prone to be an ideal race bike (this is why the 1000RR is longer, larger and heavier - and has a steering damper). However rest assured - the 954 turns very, very quickly.
This business about the increased rotational mass of the crank compared with a 600 is all very well in theory until you consider that angular momentum is related to rpm. With 56% more torque, you don't have to rev a 954 as hard as a 600RR to punch out of corners - thus the extra rotational momentum is a non-issue.
I agree, if I was to buy a track-day only bike, I'd get the 600 over a 954 for the "flightiness" reasons listed above. But for a real world bike (occasional track, road, tour and commute) the 954 is the better bike. It's lighter, goes harder, is more comfortable, has more trunk space, looks better and wheelies easier! (56% more torque helps)!!! But I'm biased - I have one! |

If the bike was the only thing that mattered, AMA Supersport bikes wouldn't go faster than some MotoGP bikes around a racetrack. Quote: |

| I roadraced a 929 for 2 years. Rest assured, I know what I'm talking about in regards to the 929/954 chassis on the racetrack. Quote: |

| I know the forumula. I also know a 600 is easier to turn. Stand next to a racetrack and watch. Better yet, get some saddle time in them both, on a track. Quote: |
