| New Member, lots of questions... Hey guys, I'm new here, and so just wanted to say what's up.
It seems like there is a lot of knowledge swimming around here, and I just want to tap into some of it, and hopefully soon contribute to it.
I'm in SoCal, and I just bought a 1996 CBR900RR with under 12000 miles that is really good mechanically, but that needs some work to it before I put it on the road. Right now I am mainly sourcing parts to replace some cracked/broken pieces as a result of some light damage. It's mostly cosmetics that need help.
So, to the questions:
1) Do you know of any good sources for parts, other than eBay? Again, I mostly need cosmetics, i.e. fairings and a few little bits of functional stuff. So far eBay has been very good to me. Lots of parts, and cheap.
2) Interchangeability. Is there any source for finding out what parts may be interchangeable between years/models? For example, I have a broken throttle mechanism on the right clip-on. I have noticed that the newer (I tihink 929 and up) RR's have an integrated kill switch and throttle mechanism. I like that, and I want to know if I can put one of those on my bike to replace the switch and throttle mechanism. If yes, on a related note, will the same part (integrated switch/throttle) from a CBR1100xx work also? I don't care if I have to splice to use my existing connectors for the electrical, I'm mainly concerned about having the same number of wires performing the same function, and the actual compatibility of the throttle mechanism. Plug and play would be nice too.
3) More interchangeability. Will a full set of 98/99 bodywork fit my bike? I heard somewhere that I may need a different rear subframe to mount the tail section.
4) Front wheel upgrade. Should I upgrade to a 17" rim? I've heard two answers. The first is, absolutely. The second is, jus put a really good tire up front.
5) If the latter is a solid option, what tire do you recommend?
I'll stop there, and hope someone out there can help me out. Also, excuse me if any of this is answered in the past, maybe you can help me find the info?
Thanks,
Mike |

| Re: New Member, lots of questions... Welcome! Can't answer most of your questions, but I'll take a stab at a few. Check with Ron Ayers for parts. I think they also have an online parts microfiche where perhaps you can look up the body work. If it were my bike, I'd upgrade to 17" rims, as you'll have more tire choices. I had 18" rims on my old FZR and it was a pain to get modern rubber. My two top tire choices are Pirelli Diablo Corsas and Michelin Pilot Powers. I haven't used the latter yet, but I understand they are comparable to the Diablos. If either of those comes in 16", then keep your front wheel! |

Just kidding you can give people with good (or bad) replies feedback and it affects their reputation based on you power. I am not sure how you get power (seems to change with feedback taken and given).

| Re: New Member, lots of questions... Swap it to a 17". I never had a 900RR but people who did it, including some on this site, really liked it.
The 16" was an experiment by Honda that didn't work out (if only because you can't get much modern rubber). Ironically, racers are back to 16.5" wheels. |

| Re: New Member, lots of questions... I have a '96 900RR as well, but I do have the stock 16" rim on the front. I would say that if you are planning on just running on the street it isn't necessary. I heard everyone saying that it's a must to change it, but I haven't had any problems with stability whatsoever (granted, I don't go 100+mph all the time either). Also, you can get a bunch of different street tires in the 16" form.
Not sure which ones, but I know the 900s shared some parts with the F3s.
oh, and welcome! |
