| hey guys! new biker with question... i just wanted to get the opinion of a few of you more experienced bike riders out there. and ill go ahead and let you know im new to bikes in general so feel free to give as much advice as you can give!
ok, i want a bike. my current situation that i drive a 1990 nissan 300zx twin turbo pulling about 350rwhp, and happens to be my daily driver. ive got a good bit of experience in driving a wide variety of powerfull and dangerous-if-not-carefull automobiles. i also happen to be quite the mechanic. as far as bikes go im brand new to it, i do know how to drive one as far as changing gears and all goes, and ive ridden a dirt bike or two, but i see people riding sportbikes all the time and i really want in on some of that fun. and now my question:
i want a fast bike. im thinking really fast, like cbr 1000rr fast. and i hear from alot of other people that is not such a good idea to start with something so powerfull, most are telling me to get a cbr600 or the equivalent. problem is, and i could be wrong, but i think as far as i go i would not be satisfied with the cbr600. i want a bike that when i get on the throttle it will make me instantly think "WOW!!!", and im betting the cbr 1000 will do so.
my thinking is that instead of getting a "begginer" bike, i'll get the 1000 and detune it untill ive got some experience and i know more about what to expect. is this a bad idea? i just dont want to end up with a bike that i personally think is slow. i want at LEAST a 10.5 or less in the 1/4 mile. any input and advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! |

| Re: hey guys! new biker with question... A powerful motorcycle is very different than other vehicles. There are a lot dynamics you just don't get with a car. Trust me, you can scare the bejeezus out of yourself with an SV650, which has about half the horsepower of a 1000RR. Once you think you've "outgrown" a little bike and get a little too brave, you can easily end up with lots of interesting x-rays. That being said, a rider with a good head on his shoulders doesn't necessarily need a smaller bike to stay alive while he learns, but big HP can get you into trouble a lot faster...

| Re: hey guys! new biker with question... welcome to the org!
Question: have you ever been on a modern day sportbike? the 600s are certainly nothing to scoff at these days. A heavy throttle hand can get you going ridiculous speeds pretty quickly with those too. I have a '96 900RR, which I'm sure is slow by today's standards, but in reality it has more neck-snapping power than I'll ever use. Also, being in a fast car and on a fast bike are two wholly different experiences, FWIW.
I'm not trying to tell you that you should get a pocket bike to start, this is just food for thought! |

| Re: hey guys! new biker with question... yea i do like the 900rr's, i saw a 1999 for sale around $5-6000, if i took it easy for the first 4-6 months and got used to things do you think that would be a better decision? and yea i am realizing more about how a fast bike would be different, for one i have to hold on or fly off the back . thanks for the info, and any advice or tips on riding in general would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys. |

I think it best to start on something cheap that you won't get bent out of shape about if(when) you make an oops or two and it gets damaged. You don't need to come out of the gate thinking you can jump on a 150+hp liter bike and throw down like the pros cause the only place that will get you is into the hospital or an early grave. Keep the tires down and enjoy the rides.

| Re: hey guys! new biker with question... Yeah, start out with a cheap 600 that you won't worry about dumping or getting rid of cheap. I mean, you're doing that with cars anyway, may as well do it right in the bike world too.
The F2 would be a great bike to learn with. |

Here goes..............Don't even think about a CBR1000RR, or a CBR600RR, or anything else with half that power. Something like a used Kawasaki Ninja 250R will be enough to frighten the life out of you for a first bike. After 20,000 miles of practice on that you can think about moving up to a faster bike. (if you make it that far) |
