| Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Hi, I'm a new member to this forum. I have recently put a down payment on a used/new 954RR. I made the transition from yammy however. I must admit, I had been in the market for a new R1 after a recent theft of my old R6. After looking into a few leads I felt it may be best to consider the almighty 954RR. The deal was for an 02 with 3.5kmiles with damper, ackropovik s/o(spelling?), flushmounts, and sliders. I'm aware of the updated steering head bearings that was included in the price of 6.5k. I hope i got a good deal even if the warranty runs out in May '06.
In the past I have owned a CbrF4, so I do like and am partial honda. The 954 is a new beast to me however, so, any good advice would be appriciated. This is my fisrt liter mill, but not my first S/bike. How likely is the rear to slip under hard accel with warm tires?? Is this machine going to last with fair treatment ,valve adjustment intervals on average( my handbook says check, but the chart only goes to 25k miles????), common adjustments to look for, most problematic part of the bike, any strange noises that are normal ect.............
Thank you for reading. I will post pictures as soon as possible but up to the middle of jan. The dealer needs time to perform requested upgrade. See ya.....
soon i hope........ |

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Go to HelmInc click aftermarket and get the service manual. Money well spent and this is the official manual. Any decent liter bike can slip the back end, so throttle control Good luck and I will let the other comments come from 954 owners. |

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Welcome from another NJ rider! It's a great bike, very reliable. I haven't had the rear break loose on me, but the front gets very light under hard acceleration, so it's great that your bike came with a damper. Otherwise, I'd say that would be the first thing you should get. We've got quite a few NJ members, we should try hooking up for a ride in the Spring... |

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Suspension setup is important, especially on the 954. At a minimum get it set for your weight and riding style. "Search" for suspension on here.
The beauty of the 954 is you can readily exploit the power with less fear than say a new GSXR, as the rear stays well planted (even if you're a bit ragged on the throttle, or ham-fisted).
I would think you wouldn't have to adjust your riding style too much from the 6.

If you can, get your forks re-sprung (and valved if possible) it makes a huge difference. and if the budget stretches, an Ohlins rear shock is a fantastic investment

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. just adjust the valves every 16k and change the oil regularly and you're pretty much good as far as the engine goes. The valves can be pretty noisy but its normal and its nothing bad.

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Execellent, thanks for all the advise everyone.....i'm very much looking foward to picking it up when DHY's prep work is done. I ride in philly almost exclusively so once it warms up perhaps i may cross paths with you/s. Are the rumors of the 954 being prone to headshake valid???? I would say it ranks high as something i want to find out for my own...or well the lack thereof i should say........are there any philly riders here?????? talk to ya soon, thanks!!!rob. |

| Re: Hello, first time member here, I must admit i cheated though. Headshake rumors are very valid. However, you said the bike has a damper, which is exactly what is needed to keep the bike in check. I plan to get one for mine asap.
Basic formula - Lightweight + power + short wheelbase = Twitchiness (Basically) |
