Hello from Baghdad

I'm currently deployed to Baghdad, Iraq (Army). I joined the site for more information and opinions on the 929RR. Just want to get rid of that damn message that keeps telling me to post this message =] Great site and more evidently, great people.

x 10. Thanks for serving!!! We appreciate the sacrifice you are making for us - being away from your family, friends and your bike in that shithole.

Stay safe.

Thanks again, I've got 150ish days left so it's all downhill from here! Can't wait to get back home.

That's excellent! I spent nine months in Qatar during Desert Storm for the Air Force. That whole region just sucks - I can still remember everyone counting backwards to the day they go home like you are.

Thanks again! ... and if anybody deserves a new bike it's someone that has served our country in that worthless and Godless region of the world. Get that 929!

Re: Hello from Baghdad

Take care and what are you hunting for on a 929? How much $$$ in your budget, riding experience, goals, etc. Maybe some of us can help you as you are us

Well to be honest, my riding experience is limited to about 2 years on dirt bikes. I'm willing to spend around 5k, but depending on how the wallet looks after I get back perhaps a little more. I had my heart set on a 929, but the more I read the more I'm starting to think maybe I'm aiming too high too early. *shrug* I'm still open to suggestion, albeit heavily biased towards a 929 Thanks for all the well wishing guys, we all appreciate it over here.

Re: Hello from Baghdad

tls, welcome to the site.

Be careful over there!

Now, as you've probably heard, when you get home, you're like the highest risk group for getting killed. Servicemen that come home from the sandbox typically run out and buy a super fast bike....often unfortunately they also end up stunnas. There are articles about it daily in San Diego.

Aim much lower, I'd suggest an SV650, or last generation 600, like an F4i, AT MOST. Make sure you wear all your gear, including at a minimum, phucking gloves, boots, leather jacket and helmet. Get trained at an MSF course, preferably before you buy. Liter bikes will still be here for you after you get over the steep part of the learning curve.

And most of all, have fun!

I was definitely going to attend an MSF, I think it's also a requirement as part of riding on post @ fort bragg. At least some form of a motorcycle training class is, whether or not it's MSF. I've looked at the 600F4i's a little bit, I'll take a gander at the SV650's. Thanks for the input =]

Re: Hello from Baghdad

An SV650 will probably not impress any newbie motorcycle riders, nor the neighbors. Some might even call it a chick bike. You'll get the last laugh when you ride better than them, and maybe get to your local cafe at the end of a twisty road first.

But if you look around on the board, you'll find many people as they gather experience on the track and such, they end up selling literbikes to buy SVs.

They look pedestrian, but the sky really is the limit with them.

Example.

Finally got out on the track - some thoughts about the CORE trackday at Grattan 5-20

Re: Hello from Baghdad

You might also look at Interceptors. Not glitzy but a very nice all round bike. The only downs I see with them is linked brakes (some love them) and only an 800 so not as good for two up. But a great bike.

Thanks again, I know I should listen to you guys as you're all infinitely more experienced riders than I. Buuuuuuut on the other hand, the devil that rests on my shoulder says 929. And unfortunately I'm prone to listening to him more often than not. I still have 4 1/2 months to decide (and buy ) I've been watching alot of nice bikes coming and going and I can't do anything about it. Regardless of my final decision, I appreciate all your input. Only makes me wiser in the long run.
