'03 954 for a first bike?

Oh I mean first liter bike

Been reading a lot of posts from here the last couple days figured id formally introduce myself.

I picked up my first bike about a year ago. 1996 YZF600. Great little bike. Put about 10k on it. Did alot of work to it (bought it wrecked).

I originally bought a bike as a toy or somthin for weekend fun but it quickly turned into an everyday ride and commuter.

A friend of mine needed money quick so he sold me his 03 954RR for 3k. Has a rebuilt title and 27k miles but for 3k its in good shape. Needs a new tank and a new tail. Has a brand new Barnett Clutch, new fork seals, and programable tail light. I just bought a adjustable lowering link from myrtle west because I'm 5'5 and have a very short inseam.

I'm lookin forward to trying out a bigger bike. I'm not a stunter and I will be riding this bike like a granny just like i did my 600 when i first got it.

Just bought a Carbon Fiber Devil pipe. Plan on takin her apart this week, changing oil (MX-4T), spark plugs, clean air filter, etc. Gotta put a new set of pads in the front (EBC-HH) and a new front tire.

I'll be keeping an eye out on a stabilizer but that is a pretty pricey mod but probably needed due to the bikes light front end.

The only thing that is wrong with it I thought he fixed is some times randomly when you go to start it, it wont start. Everything turns on but the gauges do not fully light up with backlight and you do not hear the fuel pump. I tried the next day and it started right up. I believe this is a wiring issue, he did say it was a loose wire and he fixed it.

Other than that it feels good to own a honda, a little better than the last honda I rode (1981 CM400).

Oh here's a pic. I'll have more later.

sweet, treat her good and she should treat you good.
one thing I will say though is swap out the barnett clutch plates for stock Honda ones. there have been stories the Barnett rips up the clutch basket. How long as it been in there?

Re: '03 954 for a first bike?

Check the kill switch and side stand switch. They can get a little corroded which can sometimes prevent the bike from starting...that is unless the previous owner has botched something in the wiring.

Re: '03 954 for a first bike?

Thanks everyone. I think ill like it

About the barnett clutch it was just put in like a 12 miles ago. Is there anything I can do? I would prefer the not change the clutch especially if its new. It is very stiff though but i havent adjusted it yet. I think its probably going to be due to the barnett springs.

Re: '03 954 for a first bike?

Well I put quite a few miles on it since i last posted. Ive got pretty much all the parts done just need a gas tank and a right side fairing now and it will look perfect. So far changed oil, filter, spark plugs (used iridium), frame sliders, perfect tail, perfect headlights, new front ebc brakes, new battery, flapper mod (haven't really decided if im going to keep it) and a carbon fiber Devil pipe.

I just got new fr & r tires (Pirelli Diablos not corsa and not strada). I've always used Pilot Powers but it seems like I really like these diablos. They seem to warm up quick and grip fine. I decided to go with the 190 instead of the 180. The 200 size dunlop that i had on there (which was squared off) was what affected the handling. It now falls into the corners and leans over just like a sportbike should.

I still have a perfect swingarm (mines scratched with a broken spool mount) that im going to polish up to match the frame. I've thought about the power commander and full exhaust but i decided against it. Still have some little accessories like bar ends and grips and some touch up polishing.

The starting issue turned out to be a live wire/short in the relay. The wires are green. I haven't really had problems since twisting them but its happened once or twice but starts right back up. A little bit of liquid electric tape should fix that.

Looks nice man

How does that pipe sound?
Are you going to be getting the ram air overs or just leave them off?

Anyways looks sweet and glad you enjoy it.
