| whats the difference Hi All, Just moved back to Australia after being in Canada for 14+yrs. Brought my 2000 CBR929RR (fireblade) with me. DOT in Australia refused it because I cant get Australian compliance??? whats the difference between the Canadian Design and the Australian?? They said if I could get Honda to provide a certificate they would accept it in. Honda wont help..and now my bike is in a bonded warehouse and I have been told to either send it back or have it DESTROYED!! How nice, can anyone help? |

| Re: whats the difference Yeah I couldn't believe that they would be that cold....I have sent another request to Honda but I'm not hopful....I will be paying a visit to the local RTA as well. They also said that I could abandon it and they would dispose of....?? yeah rite!! All this is because of some screwy advice I got befor I shipped it....I was told that I could apply for a roadworthy inspection to put it on the road after customs cleared it....customs seem fine with the bike and cleared it but the department of Transport and regional services (Motor Vehicle Imports office) said no way so now it sits. |

| Re: whats the difference Although I was bum ass BS info from the shipping company, my application was submitted pretty much as the ship docked and refused.....if you want to read why Im now so distressed go to www.wa.gov.au/licensing/1417.asp and read NOTE: import aprovals. It clearly states that they will destroy my mint 929 if I dont export it! what a joke!! |

| Re: whats the difference Can you have the bike reclassed as a race bike or something? There must be ways around this as people bring cars from the states all the time without compliance. maybe talk to someone who imports cars into W.A. Good luck and i hope you get it sorted. |

Can you bring it in for "collector" purposes, and then work on getting it legal for the road? |

man i was reading some of the import info from the web, it seems to me you have a fight on your hands. i am sure you may have found this link above but it may point in the right direction. i was amazed at the bluntness of the comment "re-export or Destroy" as i said before good luck |

It is also some rediculous high dollar fine for emissions voilations. Can any Aussies out there confirm this?????? |

| Re: whats the difference i have spent a fair amount of time surfing the net on this because it sucks. Pulling the bike into parts isn't allowable it seems that the only option is to export the bike and sell it or send it offshore and apply to bring it back via Raws, but this seems too expensive. i hope honda help you out as per the option they gave you "if I could get Honda to provide a certificate they would accept it in" this looks like your only realistic chance. |

| Re: whats the difference I find it odd the gov't says it is not in compliance yet, they have you contact Honda to find out why? Why exactly is it not in compliance? Not like the Aussie bikes come with airbags and the cunucks one's don't.
Only thing that "might" be out of whack that I can think of is the computer might be different or maybe a lighting configuration. Find someone with 929 Aussie style and do some comparisons. Only thing I got. |

Australia wants money to sell internationally made goods, just like any other country. So, they create fees that manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributers must pay to import goods, including vehicles.
Then, they either specify a particular configuration or impact or speed requirement, and use that as a legal justification for charging $ to avoid the locally-made or locally sold(sales taxes, ya know) goods.
To avoid the import tariffs and bring your own goods in, there must be paperwork, certifications, red tape, etc; all of these things are designed to make the prospective importer forget the importing and buy locally, where the gov't has taken a piece(or rather, added to the size of the bill). |

| In my manual from honda the biggest difference seems to do with the exhaust system" emissions and the noise levels". also in oz the head light on all bikes must always be on (hard wired) but these items can easily be changed. While taxes and duties are a big part of the promlem it seems that the main issue the goverment here have is that you must have approval before you import a motor vehicle.
You would like to think that if someone was given the wrong information from a shipping co, that they would give you the opportunity to make the alterations to comply if the bike is for personal use. |

| Re: whats the difference Hi All, sorry for my absence, I've been busy banging my head against walls over this matter. I contacted DOTARS again and again, and L Terry who made the descission on the refusal said they are not going to`budge, I asked if there is any problem with the bike itself and she said no, it is because I simply have not owned it long enough, but if I could get a letter of compliance from Honda they would allow it in. I spoke with her supervisor who of course backed her to the hill...I spoke with Honda again who now Im sure is pretty sick of hearing from me, Local Honda dealers are no help as I checked out a 2005 CBR1000RR and said I would trade up and pay up front if they could help (gotta try anything) and they said that no dealers could supply a letter of compliance. I spoke with local members of parliament as there is an ellection comming up soon.....nada........I tried to convince customs to release it into my custody and store it in my garrage until all the paperwork is sorted and they said not until DOTARS supplies a permit?? whats funny is that I have two pocket bikes which also require a permit.....I was sure that these would have been conviscated as they are illegal in most of oz...would you believe they gave me a permit for them but not my blade...I'm sure they were having a big old laugh when they made that descission. I sent another long email to Honda yesterday, but this time I CC'd every department they have related to engineering, sales, imports, complaints etc asking why so many people and companies can import CBR250's and 400's from all over Asia and get complianced but I cant bring in one bike from CANADA where I have found all levels of compliance seem to be the same is rediculous....The New Zealand system seems to be logical as their customs release the vehicle/bike and it is then inspected by their inspectors for roadworthiness. If it does not pass you then have to make any mods to satisfy them...makes sense....Any how I am new to this site and realy appreciate the interest my situation has generated...Thanks all and thanks for the advice and input. Cheers. |
