| I'm gonna do it! Well, the wife finally agreed to a motorcycle. I've been riding on and off for years (mostly off) because i don't hvae my own. I keep getting my temps though. I'm going to start off by buying a used motorcycle, probably a 750C. I have experience riding the Yamaha V-Max and a couple other bikes, but think a 750 will be a nice bike for me to get experience on.
So, it's good to be here and i hope to get great advice! The ford truck forum i'm part of is super-terrific. |

| Re: I'm gonna do it! Welcome!
What sort of 750? If you're talking about something like a GSXR750, then no way. That is not a good first bike.
Contrary to what a lot of guys do when they go out and get their first bike, in this instance, bigger is not better. I'd recommend something even smaller than a 750....a 600 even, or even smaller than that.
As a suggestion, the CBR600F2/F3 is a very highly regarded bike that keeps a lot of newer riders honest.
And as the others have mentioned, definitely DO take the MSF course. Your life depends on having the skills needed to ride a motorcycle safely and in control. Riding around with other friends 'teaching' you is no substitute for paid, professional instruction.
And get all the good safety gear too. Good helmet, jacket/leathers, boots, gloves and even a back protector. Spend good money on all these items...just don't go for what's on sale. Composite helmet (not injection molded plastic), CE equipped jacked with hard armor, shin high boots and reinforced gloves. You don't want to become a squid!
One last bit of (important) advice I can give you is that when you shop for gear, don't buy by what brand you want to see yourself in...... or what the salesperson says is all the rage. Buy what feels comfortable to you.
Finally, stay safe out there.
Cheers,
Sime |

| Re: I'm gonna do it! a modern 600 is probably going to be more than enough. Although to be fair my brother in law went through the same dilemma. He used to ride a GSX1100 years back. He stopped riding for nearly 12 years and one day decided to get back into it. He decided right from the top to get a new GSX1000. Everyone told him to get the 600 but he got the 1000K5. He absolutely loves it. However, Sime has provided some good advice. Let us know how you are getting on. |
