New member-Can anyone HELP me?

First, this is a cool site, but I do have a problem with my 98 Superhawk. Here is the scoop. Riding home on the freeway, I look down at the instrument cluster & tach, odom, & speedometer are dead. I was 12 miles from home, but bike was running fine. Blinkers were "very" low. I take the off ramp & at 2k rpm the bike dies. No electrical, so i shut off the key & wait 5 min or so & turn on key(pwr) & the lights now work, but not enough juice to start bike. Guy jump starts me & off i go, but after riding for 3 minutes the speedometer dies first, then 15 seconds later the tach dies, then 10 seconds later the odom dies. I keep the rpm around 3k & barely make it to my house 2miles away before it dies in the driveway. (It back fired (small) at the end) I left it turned off for 1hr, but no battery pwr this time. Background: Since i have owned the bike (4yrs) the instrument back lights are weak, (some lights burned out or not in.)but the last week or so I noticed that the instrument panel lights have been brighter at times. (not sure if this could be part of the problem.) The bike has 22k miles. Help plz and thank you to all who respond.

Re: New member-Can anyone HELP me?

you need to check your battery, stator and R/R and see if everything is in good working order and charging and putting out the voltage it's suppose to be putting out, if it's not then any combination of the 3 if not all of them need to be replaced

Re: New member-Can anyone HELP me?

Sounds like the stator has crapped out and you were running on the bat for awhile.

Re: New member-Can anyone HELP me?

Atreyu,
you replied so fast. Thanks. Do you think there is a problem with the lights in the instrument panel?

Re: New member-Can anyone HELP me?

Help again. I just grabbed my manual & it doesn't list a "Stator". What is this part?

Re: New member-Can anyone HELP me?

it's equivalent to an alternator in a car, sometimes they list it as such in the manual

no I don't think there is much of a problem other then the one you had before your charging probs, the cluster should be fine but the only way to be sure is get the charging system diagnosed and fixed to tell
