'82 KZ 440 LTD wont start

I recently purchased a 1982 KZ440LTD. the bike it self is great shape (but old, left in a barn for years shape). When the start button is pressed nothing happens. i have shorted the posts on the starter solenoid and the bike starts up.
Has anyone run into this and if so (or not) what is the best way of tracking down the problem.
