I've got a friend who plays the stock market all the time, up down and sideways he's in there working an angle. He was prepared well before the meltdown happened. Anyway he called me up last week and when I asked him about the stock market and what he was doing he said he was working on buying some options that expired around 2012. My understanding of this is that he gets todays market prices in 2012 so he has a long term position and might just turn a large profit, it's not my thing but I thought it sounded interesting.

Options are great as long as you pay up before the expiry date. Otherwise you could end up paying the current (or more expensive) price.
