| CBR929, newb questions. Hi, I've been in the market for a bike for a while now off and on and finances have provided but I'm in the position to trade one of my other toys for an 2000 CBR929 with exaust and PC.
Now, a few questions; how reliable are these bikes at high milage? This CBR is pushing 30k, supposing it's seen previous scheduled maintinance and hasn't been beaten on how much life is left in the engine provided good oil, regular maintinence etc..?
What are some things to look for when I go to check the bike out? Are there any common "major" problems that can't be corrected easily or cheap?
Also what would you pay for a clean 2000 with almost 30k? I'm trading a 2005 mx YFZ 450 that values around 4000 give or take a few hundred depending on the market. Does this seem like a good deal? I figured if anything I could trade down later on to someone looking to trade up if I decide I don't need a liter bike.
Also what would you estimate the MPG at near sea level? I've seen people getting around 130-140 miles to the tank but I don't even know the tank capacity.
If anyone has a link with information or would be so kind as answer any or all of my questions it would be a great help and appreciated.
Thanks,
Blake. |

| Re: CBR929, newb questions. if its your first streetbike id say go smaller, however a well kept japanese bike will last longer than you might think...
wouldnt it be better to start with a middleweight streetbike than upgrade. rather than to jump in head first and then back peddle if you find your in over your head.
no one needs a liter bike for there very first. kinda steepens the learning curve even with offroad experience two totally different animals there.
its your world though |

| Re: CBR929, newb questions. Thanks for the response man.
This is my first bike but don't get me wrong I've grown up around them, my dad had a 500 and a 750 that I drove, one of my friends when I was younger had a 250 ninja that we rode to death, I've had dirt bikes and 4 wheelers all my life. I know it's not the same but I'm very comfortable on 2 wheels and with a little seat time I'll be used to the bike in no time but believe me I will never underestimate the bikes power. When I say I might trade down that's just for cost purposes, 130 or so hp is not a necessity for what I'm using the bike for. |

| Re: CBR929, newb questions. My 2000 929 is my first bike also. I gave $4500 for it with 28k on the title. I bought it from a friend. It was a retired stunt bike and he put it all back together. It had all new oem Erion body work except for the lower fairings. He had almost $1700 in the body work. It has also had the motor replaced. After about an hour of him riding it once put back together it spun a crank bearing. The engine he put in it was supposed to have on 7k on it. I wouldn't say that a 929 is too much for a first bike if you are comfortable riding and you respect it. My bike is also geared 15/45 and it is a 1st gear wheelie monster. Nice clean 929s with 15k or so on them often bring $4000-$5000 in ebay. One thing you may want to check on it is the cam chain tensioner, I have been told that these go bad often. I did have to replace mine. You can get one and the gasket for $80 or so. |
