it's CBT & Theory test first then you have to pass part 1 before you get to do the road test (part 2).
the cert you get says module 1 on it thats why I used that termanology lol |

Whats this I hear about the Swerve? What other things did you have to do in order to get your part 1?

I hope you don't mind Steviezone, but I'm going to move this to the New Rider Orientation section of the forum.... Plus it would be great if you could do a bit of a write up on the new motorbike test for us, maybe going into the following...
The kind of things your instructor told you to help you pass..
How much of your training was taken up with learning the new manouevres..
How you felt about the test..
How things went on the day...
We may have other new riders looking for similar information and your tips and advice may just help them pass too
Good luck from me with part 2 |

Originally Posted by Twincam Whats this I hear about the Swerve? OK from the start.
1. Move the bike (while off the bike) from between 2 cones backwards in a U turn to between another 2 cones. (this is to test balance)
2. weave (slow) in and out of 6 cones and at the end of them you do 2 figures of 8.
3. The Dreaded swerve. you start a one side of the yard and ride in a big U bend at 19 miles an hour, when the roan straightens out you have to pick up your speed to 50km 32mph (at least) to go through the speed camera, directly after camera there is a gap in the cones which you swerve through (I think it's a 3 meter gap) then you have to stop with your front wheel within 4 cones a wee bit further up.
4. from where you stopped on the swerve you do a U turn between 2 painted lines then stop.
5. you do the 5mph move forward with the examener walking in front.
6. Emergency stop. back to where you started on the swerve, all the same as that but you dont swerve, when you go through the speed camera the examener will signal you to stop..... so you do lol (in control of course)
then it's back to the office for hopfully a pat on the back and a cert saying you passed
This is the same for the restricted as well only you do it on a 125 rather than the 500.
Did that help? |

| Re: Passed Module 1 Yep helped a lot thanks
Most riders (who took their test back in the 80s/90s) seem to have trouble with slow manouvers - glad they are teaching (and testing) people on it.
On a rating of 1-10, how hard was it?

I found the test actually quite easy, I failed the first time round because I put my foot down doing the U turn (I'd done 30 or 40 before no problem as well so it really annoyed me lol) but I never even got 1 minor which most minors you get from the lifesavers or lack of them. you have to treat it as though you are on the road.
The second time I got 1 minor, lifesaver doing the 5mph walking speed.
a few of us went to another test center and got a shot of it for free 2 weeks before my test which helped. when you go in the place it honestly looks like a yard full of traffic cones just scattered all over the place and is a bit confusing.
the swerve is quite intimidating. for someone new like myself to do the swerve and stop so quick is scary. I can understand why people have fell off and take out cones.
the guy who has been doing it with me has failed the swerve twice. first time he done 60khm and took out 2 of the cones he was supposed to stop in and almost the fence. (you dont have time to check your speed you have to go with your gut).
The second time he failed he was doing 56khm and stopped just after the cones so failed.
He would give it a 7 or 8 probably.
Me I'd give it probably a 4 on test day. (although that didnt stop me shi**ing bricks before and during the test). |

Just for reference here are the layouts for the cone set up.. You can either do the left hand circuit on test day, or the right hand one.. |

But you do get 2 trys at the swerve if you dont get up to speed first time. (only if you dont hit a cone) |

| Re: Passed Module 1 Thanks mate, nerves i think, i now know i've got to nail it round the bend next time.
I do think the test is a bit carp though, you drive in within a 30 limit then expected to do a mad maneuver over the speed limit.
Just makin excuses for failing first time round, but there was a bird doin test b4 me who did pass but was shaking in her skin because of the swerve.
She said she was going to write to the DSA.
But cheers dude |

| Re: Passed Module 1 I honestly think Module 1 is quite a good way to do it, your not actually considering you'll be doing (and have done) 60+ on the country roads, I know everyone is moaning about it and I'll probably get slated for this but it's only £10, now if it was still the old way and they added the swerve in it would be costing you something like £80 every time you fail. Me personally it cost me £20 to pass module 1, I put my foot down doing a U-turn, if that was the old way then I'd have been £160 out of poket.
I dont think a traffic cone is going to jump out at anyone while out on the bike mind you and making someone do an "emergency swerve" during a test is debatable. But as a whole, splitting the test into 2 parts is, I think, a very good way to do it. |
