250 or 650?

hey guys ... im new obviously but i just dont seem to find answers anywhere else so i put it to you to help.

i have three options going through my mind for first bike.
1) i was thinking of a honda cb400 (new) keeping through my l's and p's to upgrade later .. much later

2) buy a 650cc like a Hyosung or something learner approved (australian legal) and get it 'unlocked' when i can legally

3) get a hyosung gt250r or cbr125 or something then just upgrade once off of l's

if anyone thinks one would be better than another more imput or suggestions highly welcome as i am not sure if a LAMS approved 650 would be more value then a 250 or 125 to upgrade later.

cheers for help

Where in Oz are you?
I'm not aware the 650 Hyo or any other bikes can be restricted for LAMS approval. As far as I'm aware a bike is either approved or not?
My personal recommendation is the GPX250R. They're cheap and plentiful and been around for 21 years now (the engine goes back to '84 I think and is the same as the ZZR250) so parts are easy to source. Resale value when you're ready to trade up is pretty good and the prospective market is bigger than if you had the CBR125 for example. Find one at a good price and you can probably get back what you paid for it when it's time to sell it.
Definately put it on your test ride list.

Avoid the hyosung, the build quality is still too poor. Many people are fortunate to have no issues but the percentage of total lemons with everything going around is unacceptably high. Avoid.

As for the cbr125r, if you're in NSW its 3 years of Ls and Ps total now and you'll be over it after 5 minutes of reddling every gear. I've ridden 3 now and they're ok if you're only using it within CBD area, but they are gutless after 70..

Hyosung 250 is garbage and poorly built. Check youtube. Best option for a 250 is a Ninja.
