| For the photographers out there In my fireworks thread, Taz kindly mentioned a software program by the name of NeatImage to help reduce "noise" from digital cameras when using high ISO's or long exposure times.
Well, I'll be damned if that isn't one of the coolest (most useful) programs I've seen to date.
Thanks, Taz!
Here is a photo that I took at a recent wedding. No flash, indoors, heavy backlighting, ISO 1600...and then touched up with NeatImage Pro's automatic settings.

There is substantial noise in the original pic and much less after the NI program was used. It's kind of like the difference between ISO 800 film and ISO 200 film when enlarged. Grain/noise has definately gone down.
I'll see if I can find a more extreme example. |

| Re: For the photographers out there Opened both and placed them side by side. I must admit it took me a couple of minutes to see differences, but then I focused on the men's dark
clothing - very noticeable there!
edit: In your 2nd set of pics the differences are way obvious. That is pretty cool software!

| Re: For the photographers out there Doesn't ACDSee do pretty much the same thing? I've been using that to reduce noise since version 3..... Altho sometimes the auto settings in ACDSee can be pretty heavy handed. |

| Re: For the photographers out there I played with ACDsee when it was new and it was a little overdone. This seems to be much more realistic.
I'm sure that there are other softwares out there that does similar, there's even one call Noise Ninja that's supposed to be somewhat decent. I just felt like sharing. |

| Re: For the photographers out there Hey, NH! Glad you like it.
It takes some practice to get it right, and it's easy to overdo it - causing that "too soft" look, but it helps a lot with noise. I use Neat Image with nighttime high school football shots, anything shot at ISO 800 or above that I need to print, and even with underexposed shots that have noise. Good piece of software. |
