| Re: if you had to buy a car.. Hmm. Where to start? Probbalby an Acura Rsx type S, (35k canadain) 2 door Honda Accord v-6 (with the 6 speed, 35k canadian) and maybe for a bike hauler I would look at a extended cab Chevy Canyon? Just for starters?, I have turned into a honda/acura fanatic and I know that my choices reflect that but, for good reason. I have never had anything major go wrong with them...knock on wood...I would have picked that new honda truck for next year, but I think that it is going to be a lot of money...hope that helps sure that you'll get lots of hits on this one.
Opps I did not see the 4 door thing...sorry... the accord would still stand at #1 then I would add a jetta with the 1.8T and then maybe a nissan maxima with the 3.5 out of the Z...nice... thats just me though

Have fun.
My top picks thus far from what I have driven: Legacy GT, G35X, TL, Maxima, Mazda 6. I'm waiting to see the new Charger in person. If it looks like Chrysler's official sketch it will probably be my choice. |

{edit} Let me refraise that...on the track the Evo is faster. In the real world it all comes down to the driver of course. I have always had a place in my heart for an Impreza butthere's something about the Evo that just draws me in. It would be a tough choice for me, I'd have to drive them both first t see which to get.

Dano | Splitting hairs. Like saying that the GSX-R1000 is faster than the 1000RR. It is, but only under some circumstances. The two cars are so close in performance, that even a slight difference in skill of the driver will make the better driver come out on top, regardless of the car |

Very easy to get in and out, lots of storage, and great mileage. Plus you get to keep $$$$ (the blower kit would not be needed though) The Toyota version is a Matrix but I like the Pontiac better.
EDIT: Plus she could get her favorite sun-in-law a new bike for Christmas

| Re: if you had to buy a car.. I have become a HUGE Subaru fan. There are a few qualifiers based on your needs though.
I drive a WRX Wagon, 5-speed. 220hp. The power is great, the utility of the wagon is much better than the sedan, and it's a 4-door. A local rally company claims they can simply re-flash the computer and get about another 60hp out of the car w/o affecting fuel/reliability. If it's for your mother-in-law, will she want an automatic? I wouldn't buy the WRX in an Auto.
The STI only comes in manual transmission. It's an AWESOME car, but keep in mind that it was purpose built for rally racing. the radio is about a $700 option, tires are for good weather only! You may have to buy a set of winter treads depending on where you live.
-Never been a big fan of VW's...overpriced IMO.
-I've had too many friends that weren't supported by Mitsu when problems arose under warranty.
For what you're describing the Mazda 6, altima/maxima may be good options.
It's fun to spend other people's money...isn't it?

I think you shoulda read what you wrote, you said the stock Lancer (which is the lowest model in the line) is faster than the STi (which is the highest model in the Imprezza line) the STi would kick the crap out of a simple Lancer. you gotta be specific and say Evo or Evo8, in which case they are very even as has been said.
as for the question at hand, isn't a 3.5 Maxima more than $30k. I say go with the 3.5 Altima, looks much better. a friend of mine has a 2.5 altima 5 speed, its pretty nice, not the quickest but still nice.

| Re: if you had to buy a car.. Forgot to add....
The new Subaru Legacy GT looks sweet, is a four door, great fit and finish, 250hp, and you can get it with a sport-shift trans. Good for you and your mother-in-law (I sound like a freak'n commercial, but no I'm not a Subaru dealer lol) All of thier models are AWD. |
