For those that are even interested (which makes me think, not a lot of people even offered ideas, not a helpful site unless its bikes, insular attitude) anyway I got help from sscottab so fingers crossed I can get it up and running in the next fortnight.
Thanks a lot Sir

I was keeping my suggestion to myself but
1 put it under a truck tire
2 move the truck over it
3 repeat step 2
4 buy a Mac

Re: Dead Laptop help needed

Not sure if problem is solved, but this thing is kind of my forte.

If this hasn't been asked, some basic questions if your problem is not solved.

When you get past the initial startup screen what, if any errors are displayed?

If errors are displayed are they something similar to no boot device available?

You stated you have tried booting from cd, but have you ensured your bios settings are correctly set to boot from cd, or did you specifically select
"boot from cd" in the boot options?

If your pc died like that but it still turns on and displays the initial startup screen (the manifacturer logo appears and so forth) then one of the most common type of failure on laptops especially is hard drive failure.

Oh yeah, if the screen is powered but not outputting anything then that is a very likely cause. I don't know if you have attempted it, but if the laptop has an external monitor connection (most do now) it might be worth a shot hooking it up to a monitor if you have one to test. If error lights are appearing on startup you probably wont get that far though.

If error lights are appearing on startup you probably wont get that far though.
I keep meaning to hook it up to the tv to see but have been busy and this pc has helped me through, tried to get into it and failed miserably, then I saw how to on Utube its no easy job. I have one other simple thing to try and that is to get into to it and see if maybe the card has moved ( a slight bump may have done it) That would be far to simple an answer though

Given the card is separate from the main board, this is certainly a possibility. I would give it a shot and make sure the card is connected properly before anything else. Just take your time and keep all of the screws as organized as possible. Taking pictures of how things are organized is a great wat to start too.

Luckily the bigger dells are usually much easier to work on and open up than the smaller Japanese counterparts.

that is a possibility but i have never seen it before on a laptop, when you take it apart lay a large towel out on the table and as you take it apart keep the screws and covers together and in order so it will be easier when you reassemble. if after removing the screws and it binds when seperating take a look for a hidden screw or clip never force anything, that is how things get broken and if you cant get parts email me and ill see what i can get over here on this side of the pond.
