Sudan: Where is the international community on this one...?

What exactly is the much touted "international community" waiting for with respect to Sudan? Seems like a very short list of nations that are bearing the cost right now....

Is the UN going to act, or sit and wait until we do, then tell us how we did it wrong?

The war has pitted the Islamist Arab government against the mainly animist and Christian black Africans of the south. But as much a conflict about race and religion, this has been a war for resources: the bulk of Sudan's considerable oil reserves, as well as gold and uranium, are found in the south, which the rebels have long sought to claim as an independent nation.

"...and uranium" Yeah, why worry about Sudan?

Nobody seems to be doing the right thing there.

Nat Hentoff has been decrying the slavery that nation is still engaged in for years now, trying to get Black leaders in this country to speak and act against it, trying to get our gov't to apply pressure.

If you want to get dizzy, here's a couple of articles, one from 2001, and one from this year:Hentoff on Sudan 2001

Hentoff against the UN on Sudan 2004

Powell finally used the "genocide" word today....it's been a long time coming.

Let's see what the UN does now....

I don't get this. Africa is taboo for us to get involved with. The Euros play it off as "We don't want to relive our colonial past" and the Asians have their own version of the Monroe Doctrine going. Nobody else really has the cash to do anything there. It's sad.

The oil rich Arab states have the cash....but can they break with their culture of denial?
