a Black president

The year is 2004. When do you think we could see a Black president? I for one think it would be frikkin' tremendous to move forward instead of the same MO.

I can't say that a candidate's race will determine any moves forward or backward. Race is race - if a black candidate runs and is the most qualified then he/she's the one.

But to answer the original question, I think it's going to happen when race-warlords like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton stop fanning the race-warfare flames. Instead of focusing on the best and most qualified person for a particular task, job, or position, we're currently focusing on the best ratio or quota of a particular mix of identifiable groups to fill out.

Racists and bigots still exist (some live around me in my neighborhood, so I've recently learned) but I don't think they're strong enough in number to prevent a particular race or ethnic candidate from winning.

I think Colin Powell would win if he wanted the job.

Do you think that we have had the opportunity to elect the best or most qualified since, say, 1960? It strikes me that the best or most qualified find themselves making a killing running big companies, not running governments.

I think you took what I wrote a little out of context. I was referring to the affirmative action and quota-matching that exists in society in general, not in politics. What I was saying is that when we can get past the group-identity think and start looking at people for the individual achievements and qualities, we'll have smoother relations between races and sexes. And when that happens, it won't be such a big deal whether or not a candidate for Presidency is white, black, purple, man, woman.

No one finds themselves running big corporations, by the way. They earn those positions through lots and lots of hard work. My company doesn't elect a CEO like they do in Billy Madison.

EDIT: Yes, I think Colin Powell would offer a lot as President, but he has said in the past that he doesn't want that responsibility.

That's what I was wondering. How does a darker skin tone equal "moving forward"?
What kind of racist mumbo jumbo is that? I would never vote for someone based on skin tone. Whomever I feel is better suited for the job is who gets my vote - black, white, yellow, green, whatever - skin tone has nothing to do with "moving forward".
