In the same context, southern iberia was conquered by the moslem arabs who established a civilisation which was more more tolerant of jews and subject christians than was the equivalent christian civilisation of jews or moslems. The spaniards (Castillians and Aragonians) who fought to rid Iberia of the moslem arabs were certainly not cowardly. But neither were they particularly honourable or tolerant in their fighting or governing. Remember the spanish inquisition and invasion of central and south america!

I'm not sure medieval history has much to do with the issue of fighting terrorism today. Today's terrorist is tomorrow's goverment leader where political issues are concerned. Where terrorists fight for religion and belief it is much harder to see where any logical discussion or political negotiation can be successful.

I don’t think Nedro was talking about ancient Spanish history. I believe his comments were in reference to Spain’s pulling out of Iraq as a direct result of the Madrid train bombings – which was indeed cowardly.

Jonnycrash, Figment, I apologise for the use of irony in what is a terribly sad situation.

We're waiting to hear if the older UK man kidnapped alongside those two americans has been killed. Let's all just sympathise with those involved and support those brave enough to put at risk their lives for the sake of freedom.

Not to marginalize what has been done, but let's tell it how it really is. They were there for the very large, tax free paychecks.
