| Re: Is Michael Moore Right? jus' got off the telly with a friend in the 82nd...
He told me that the army **** they have is sooo incredibly outdated that they end up buying their own ****. Example, cotton/wool socks instead of coolmax ones, which are preferred of course. Coolmax shirts intead of cotton, etc... Infantry boots instead of std issue.
He told me they are still using **** that was developed before the vietnam era. Wow I say. He tells me its getting better though. Since 2000 they have received pay raises each year and slowly but surely, their equipment is getting better. I know you guys think I'm some right wing republican (which associates with clinton hating), but I'm not, so I sware the following to be his words...
He told me the cuts during the middle to late 90s in military spending had crippled them. Their equipment didn't progress, rather it got worse! Clinton he said took away their budgets and in 8 years he had only gotten 3 pay raises. He's gotten 4 since 2000... Prior to 2000, he said the 82nd didn't have std issue armor, just a brain bucket... Now they are ISSUED this stuff as std equipment, he said he though bought some thinner stuff (at his expense and less protection) so it'd be more comfortable in the heat.
And yes, the blackhawkUSA (mercenaries) guys there make deep into the triple digits and have MP5s, top-o-da-line tactical equipment, lights, comm, the whole nine yards... The gov't does more sub-contracting now than ever. Lockheed, boeing, general dynamics, etc all have guys on the ground there with more fire power than an entire company... The reality of the modern war. |
