Middle East - AP
By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli troops, backed by tanks and helicopter gunships raided a Gaza Strip (news - web sites) town Thursday, killing three Palestinians and wounding at least nine others, witnesses said.
The raid came hours after the announcement that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) had died. Sporadic violence has continued in the coastal territory even though Palestinian leaders had urged the militants to scale back operations while Arafat lay dying in a Paris hospital.
In the West Bank, hundreds of Palestinians threw rocks at Israeli cars and burned tires to vent their outrage over Arafat's death, the army said. Israeli troops used rubber-coated metal bullets and fired tear gas to break up the rally of about 400 people at Beit Umar, a village near Hebron, the army said.

| Re: Arafat Jeff Jacoby at the Boston Globe "Arafat the Monster" Quote:
In a better world, the PLO chief would have met his end on a gallows, hanged for mass murder much as the Nazi chiefs were hanged at Nuremberg. In a better world, the French president would not have paid a visit to the bedside of such a monster. In a better world, George Bush would not have said, on hearing the first reports that Arafat had died, "God bless his soul."
God bless his soul? What a grotesque idea! Bless the soul of the man who brought modern terrorism to the world? Who sent his agents to slaughter athletes at the Olympics, blow airliners out of the sky, bomb schools and pizzerias, machine-gun passengers in airline terminals?

I actually emailed this guy and thanked him for providing this perspective as many world leaders and media luminaries are tripping over themselves to get a good word in for this autocratic, murdering

| Re: Arafat It's inconceivable to me that he was given the Nobel Peace Prize....
When that happened, I really wondered if the world had gone mad....

| Re: Arafat I noticed how the frenchies tripped over themselves praising this thug and trying to send him off in a hero's fashion, and it made me wonder: Would they do the same if it were the President of the United States? I doubt it. |

| Re: Arafat Any opinion on why they agreed upon a burial spot so quickly....
I had assumed that this debate would rage on for some time....
