| ACLU is Challenging CA Prop 69 (the DNA bank) While everyone was worried about Bush and Kerry, the far more important local elections turned out awful, IMO, in CA.
One of the laws passed was prop 69 mandating the collection of DNA from anyone arrested on felony charges. Not convicted of, on arrest.
Very Orwellian right? Well the ACLU, who I find it easy to hate since they only fight for the civil liberties they think are important, and not all found in the Constitution, are taking it to court. And for once, I'm almost happy with them...(old article, but I just heard on the radio this morning they have actually filed the case, and I can't find a new article on that yet) http://www.kxtv10.com/storyfull.asp?id=8475 |

| Re: ACLU is Challenging CA Prop 69 (the DNA bank) Sounds fine to me. They fingerprint you when you are arrested (whether guilty or not). DNA is just a better fingerprint... |

| Re: ACLU is Challenging CA Prop 69 (the DNA bank) I don't see a big problem with it either. they can pull 1 hair or do an inner cheek swab. its not like it has to be anything invasive. besides whats the problem if you are innocent and never get arrested again in your life.

I don't have a problem w/ DNA collection. Criminals on the loose is a far bigger problem. Whatever it takes to get the serial murderer/rapist off the street before he/she gets to my family is ok w/ me. |

| Re: ACLU is Challenging CA Prop 69 (the DNA bank) If it was collected after conviction, I wouldn't have a problem. But it's not.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks my privacy is worth something.
If we were so damn worried about keeping criminals off the street, why did we also "defang" the 3 strikes law? The only thing you can reliably correlate with a drop in crime is an increase in the rate of incarceration.
So, we vote to make life easier on criminals, but also vote to let the government take DNA from people who are not necessarily criminals...in the meantime having our most personal information filed by some idiot govenrnment bureaucrat. Forever.

| Re: ACLU is Challenging CA Prop 69 (the DNA bank) A fingerprint is not DNA.
It is totally different. My fingerprint is a mark. My DNA is my life, my genetic code.
I also posit, while DNA is nearly ironclad in court, it is easily faked. More easily than a fingerprint.

The politicians left the ideals of traditional Californians behind long ago IMO. |

OK, lemme rephrase. I have no cable, satellite, dish, or even rabbit ears. My TV is a 15 YO mono Sony Trinitron. It does at least have a remote control.
I decided to watch the elections on TV and had to dig out my PS 2 to use the coax cable as my antenna. |
