| Re: Hiroshima...60 years on With all respect, I think you need to put this in some historical perspective.
Several WWII conventional bombings caused very high numbers of casualties - Dresden ( 30,000), London (65, 000) and the firebombing of Tokyo ( 100, 000) come to mind.
Japan's own imperialism in China caused 11 MILLION deaths, 10 Million of them civilian. http://bss.sfsu.edu/tygiel/Hist427/t...iicasualty.htm
More to the point, you need to remember that the Axis powers started a war that caused 61 MILLION people to lose their lives.
So 140,000 deaths (210,000 with Nagasaki) were clearly just a small part of the overall global carnage.
We pay special attention to these particular bombings for emotional reasons, and we all hope that they will never be repeated.
But Pol Pot killed more people in your lifetime, and close to your own shores. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Coucescu, Idi Amin, and many more that don't come immediately to mind have tortured and destroyed so many more people than that, it's not even comparable.
Look up some of these occurrances and get a better idea of how ****ed up we humans really are.

| Re: Hiroshima...60 years on Oh, I see. So that was your original point, that the bombing of Hiroshima "makes any event recently ( like the WTC ) pale in comparison."
Sorry, I took you seriously and tried to inform your worldview there.. it won't happen again. You're not related to Cowboy1600 by any chance? |

I started this thread to bring the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and nothing else.

| Re: Hiroshima...60 years on I suppose it is also significant to remember that these were the first and last (so far) deliberate uses of nuclear bombs as WoMD. We hold these in particular horror, and that horror led to a change in behaviour.

Certainly hundreds of thousands of allied forces, and possibly millions, would've also died.
I read the reports of these stupid morons "the nuke didn't have to be used", it was "sending a statement"...well, no ****. That's how you win a war, you break the enemy's will to fight.
We could've carpet/fire bombed the rest of Japan, and then planned and executed D-Day Part ni. Most people don't know, by that time, American industry was slowing down and stopping production, though they didn't know about the forthcoming nukes....there was simply no way Japan could win that war...our industrialists were just starting to hit their stride.
Dropping the nukes saved millions of lives. Was it ugly? HELL YES! Was it as ugly as marching across Japan conquering the whole country? HELL NO!
Present events are some radical bastards strapping bombs to themselves and annoying the hell out of good people. WWII was an attempt by the axis to conquer the world. Do not even attempt to compare them....

Is that why you are a mod? I like coming in here because most of you guys are self-righteous wankers who think the world revolves around the US.
I'm an American living in Australia and I tell you what it doesnt! Go and live in another country for a while and you will find out real quick. |

We all know that...you've stated it ad nauseum... Just curious again, why do you feel this has any bearing on anything, and specifically why do you feel the need to repeat it so often.... | Well I figured with all the fast food and crappy sitcoms you guys watch your attention span would be too short to remember that fact. Besides I'm not anti-US, just anti-Bush and most of you guys are just like Bush.
You guys dont listen to reason as you all think you're right so why bother saying something meaningful?
BTW - Did I mention I was American? Also I was in the US Military |
