Axis of Weasels: Schroeder is out...

Good news...

Quote:
Exit Poll: Germans Oust Schroeder's Party
By DAVID RISING, Associated Press Writer

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's government was voted out of office Sunday as conservative challenger Angela Merkel's party led in parliamentary elections, according to an exit poll.
The exit poll from ZDF public television showed Merkel's Christian Democrats with 37 percent of the vote and Schroeder's Social Democrats with 33 percent.
However, the Christian Democrats' showing was worse than expected and made it uncertain they would win a majority with their preferred coalition partners, the pro-business Free Democrats, and make Merkel the nation's first female chancellor.
The vote centered on different visions of Germany's role in the world and how to fix its sputtering economy. Schroeder touted the country's role as a European leader and counterbalance to America, while Merkel pledged to reform the moribund economy and repair ties with Washington.

The Free Democrats have to form a new coalition - never underestimate the ability of super-weasels in such circumstances.

This is good news. Apparently being anti-American in and of itself doesn't constitute a solid political platform. From what I've read about Merkel, she is a true conservative and believes in small government. The socialist model there has proven itself to not work very well. Hopefully she will usher in a new era.

Well, not in the Bundersrepublik at least. Not yet. In Iran it was a solid way to win an election though.

Re: Axis of Weasels: Schroeder is out...

Well, as you now know, he isn't exactly out yet. Not exactly a cliff-hanger, but it's far from clear what the final form of coalition will be.

If anything, Schroeder has a marginal advantage over Merkel in the likelihood of being leader of the resulting multiparty government because the leftists might abstain for him and vote against Merkel if it comes to a minority vote in the lower house. Given the terrible campaign Merkel ran, if the grand coalition (CDU/CSU/SPD) gets negotiated, she probably wouldn't lead it.

Opportunity missed in my view, but the German electorate voted against significant economic reform in this election.

Sounds like a third world cease fire between two warring tribes. Not an election in a democratic government.

Besides, if we leave maybe they'll expend some of their pent up energy by kicking around the frenchies again. The world could use that entertainment right now.

Alas, they never seem satisfied after the first course.

A modest proposal..

Instead of troops, why don't we leave several hundred nuclear warheads we're not using with a big "do not touch" sign..

That way when they revert to form and start shouting and invading people again we can just detonate them remotely.
