Re: DRAFT

Now was pretty old by internet standards. As for a draft happening. I think impeachment hearings for G.W. would follow shortly after the reinstatement of the draft.

Re: DRAFT

Saying that I would be against the draft would be like saying that this generation is somehow better than those that served(or drafted) in WWI, II or Korea. We have reaped the benefit of a strong free country from others sacrifices, but now are against that what has made us strong. I guess this is a sensitive subject for me as my Dad is a 2 war verteran and I served 8 years active duty as well. I left the door wide open everyone, go ahead and chime in.

I truly believe the best fighting army is a volunteer army.

Personal experiences and beliefs aside, using a Hollywood ( )representation of the facts-

For a stark contrast, compare the opening scenes of:

Enemy at the Gates vs. Saving Private Ryan

I had the privelage of spending the day hiking with a young South Korean (who are all required to serve in the military) doctor who was doing his year in the army as a medic. He did not have many good things to say about the government or army.

Our standing army is way too damn big anyway.

This thread went stale so I thought I would spruce it up.

If you were against a new draft I wouldn't think that you thought that this generation was better than previous generations. I would think that you had learned from the mistakes of history and were rather enlightened about the current state of world affairs. Have you asked you dad what he would think if Bush ordered a new draft? And if so what did he say?

I think you totally misread my intention. I am all FOR a draft. I fell (God help me for putting my opinion out there) that anyone who benefits from a country as free and great as ours shoud give back for future generations just as our past generations have done for us. 2-4 years should be mandatory (imo). That is not saying that women should be put into combat positions but there are military related fields that apply (that is a whole other topic). And my father...imagine a 70 year old WWII and Korea verteran who was not drafted, but was a volunteer. A Marine to boot. I dont think I need to add what his opinion on the draft is. Doest this "spruce" things up enough for you.... :>
