My faith in Australia...

...just went up a tick:

CANBERRA: Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told
on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted
radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after
a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at
a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his
ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted
that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if
they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws
were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want
a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia
is not for you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to
clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in
Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that
that is false.

If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts,
democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to
go to another country which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a
better option," Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics
would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could
possibly be asked move to the other country.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims
who did not want to accept local values should "clear off."
"Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't
want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then
they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered
some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spies
monitoring the nation's mosques agencies.

There's been a big push by the muslim community in Canada to have the government officially recognize Sharia Law. Sorry folks, you wanna live in this country, you obey our laws.

Re: My faith in Australia...

All for this, but not just int he case of Muslims, but anyone who feels that their homeland has better values or laws should just head back. Our laws are far from perfect, but it's everyones choice to live with them or go.

I do find it interesting the amount of political correctness crap that you yanks have to endure at times. I heard on the radio this morning about 90 year old ladies having to be stripped searched so that the anti terrorism laws are seen as fair.

Does this mean, then, that if a witness sees a 6ft blonde male in his mid twenties murder someone, that we have to arrest a 60 year old asian woman because it is PC?

Z...

Yeah, the TSA is a joke. If it were a private organization, not a gubmint one, it might actually look for terrorists rather than wasting the time of non-threats.
Just a couple weeks ago I was on the way back from a quick trip to Denver. I had a laptop with me, and had thrown in a Hot Wheels car that I had picked up as "promotional propaganda" from a software company. The genius running the X-ray machine decided that my bag constituted a threat because she couldn't figure out what the Hot Wheels car was. I had to do the whole search thing, all because some gubmint union moron thought my bag was suspicious.
Look for fukking terrorists. Don't terrorize law abiding citizens bringing home toys for their kids. What percentage of plane hijackings and murders have been committed by non-Muslims in the last 20 years in America?
Political Correctness is asinine, and only serves to get innocent people killed.

It does seem easy enough to say. But, in all fairness, we're still in the early days of learning how to deal with this kind of thing. Hopefully, processes will be reviewed and tweaked over the years.

Profiling isn't the answer. So what is?

I just feel it's far too complex a situation. Do you think those folks like having to do what they do?

Re: My faith in Australia...

Cool. More countries should do things of this nature. Illegals should be shot on site and then returned to the political leaders of thier home country. If that home country cannot be determined in prudent manner, say six minutes. Then, said body should be turned into "Solient Green" and shipped to third world countries as aid.

Okay, maybe that last bit was a little over the edge. Maybe?

Profiling.
When someone commits a crime, the Police look for a suspect. Say the suspect is described as a white male, early to mid 60s, 4'1" to 5' 5" tall.
They look for those that fit the profile, and they arrest Bacchus.
There are Profilers in all large agencies that help lead to solving crimes.
The last time I looked no planes have been hijacked and used to murder innocent U.S. citizens by grandmothers - white, black, brown, red or whatever.
Sorry, but I believe profiling IS the answer.

Well, yes. Of course it worked in that situation, but what I'm talking about is a bit more widespread.

How many muslims live in this country? How many of those are potential terrorists, or sympatizers as compared to how many are innocent an law abiding citizens?

What I think you're really saying here is don't **** with whitey, just go after the 18-30 something Muslims.

And the last time I looked, it wasn't just Muslim extremists blowing up or destroying large office buildings in this country.

For right now, if you have something that can't be identified in your baggage, suck it up and deal with it. If I knew that I did, I'd damn sure want them checking it out, because that would show that they ARE on the lookout for suspicious ****.

I agree with this, but, does that mean a 90 year old lady should be strip searched (and shaved )?

Maybe the profile should be "males, 18 - 45"
