Austria seems to have given in and agreed a text allowing discussions to begin with Turkey on potential full membership of the EU. It is expected that talks will last some time and still be politically difficult. (See graph in article showing percentage of public per country approving.) |

It will be interesting to see if Ankara finally gives in a bit and recognizes Cyprus.
And from what I read in The Economist, Fogey, the process is expected to last for around a decade. |

| Re: EU agrees text to begin Turkish membership talks She seems to think the only issue is that Turkey is Muslim.
This shows an ignorant understanding of international politics.
I'm ignorant, but I know it's a much deeper issue than just religion. |

Edit: That is pretty interesting the Hungarians were so "in favor" of. I wouldn't have guessed that...like I said, I'm ignorant.

| Re: EU agrees text to begin Turkish membership talks Austria is a beautiful country, but they still have a desire to remain "Austrian". Think of them as Swiss in their cultural separateness, but not having recognised what they did in the second world war, unlike the Germans. There's not a lot of racial diversity in the Tyrol. |
