Another reason I voted for Bush...

If it's true...

Quote:
Report: Bush Talked of Bombing Al-Jazeera
By ROBERT BARR, Associated Press Writer

A civil servant has been charged under Britain's Official Secrets Act for allegedly leaking a government memo that a newspaper said Tuesday suggested that Prime Minister Tony Blair persuaded President Bush not to bomb the Arab satellite station Al-Jazeera.
The Daily Mirror reported that Bush spoke of targeting Al-Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, Qatar, when he met Blair at the White House on April 16, 2004. The Bush administration has regularly accused Al-Jazeera of being nothing more than a mouthpiece for anti-American sentiments.
The Daily Mirror attributed its information to unidentified sources. One source, said to be in the government, was quoted as saying that the alleged threat was "humorous, not serious," but the newspaper quoted another source as saying that "Bush was deadly serious, as was Blair."
Blair's office declined to comment on the report, stressing it never discusses leaked documents.
In Qatar, Al-Jazeera said it was aware of the report, but did not wish to comment.
The White House said it wouldn't dignify what it called "something so outlandish" with a response. TRIMMED - LINK TO FULL STORY

Haven't you seen Control Room? I thought he bombed it anyway... killed a few journalists. What a hero.

Re: Another reason I voted for Bush...

As much as I detest Al-Jazeera, if George bombed it, I hope he'd be impeached for violating the First Amendment.

Yes, I realize they aren't American citizens, and no, I don't care.

That is absolutely depolorable to even mention.

Re: Another reason I voted for Bush...

I think all scenarios should be discussed and evaluated. Not doing so is a failure of imagination.

I think when this plays out, it will come to light that this is exactly what was going on....

Bombing a news agency because you don't like their message?

Keeping that off the table is not lack of imagination. It's how a leader of a civilized country should act.

Hanoi Hannah, Al-Jizz-ura, there's always one, and you just have to let them be. The more he talks about them, the more credible (if that's even possible) they become.

Exactly.

Bush elevated them right to the top.

If people in the know thought it could save American lives in harms way, then I think it should be discussed....

Re: Another reason I voted for Bush...

No it shouldn't.

First off, it wouldn't matter. You'd just get the next group doing it.

Besides that, there is no congruency in thought with the democratic system, where our number one principle is freedom of the press, we're trying to help the Iraqis develop there.

That's like saying we should take away the rights of people to a warrant for search and seizure, or all people's guns to keep cops from getting hurt.

It's bogus. Freedom has a price, and our soldiers and LEOs bear much of that burden. By choice.

It's one of those that make you wonder, what if the pilot refused to drop as his orders were not consistent with the Constitution which he has sworn to uphold?

Agree... can't even be considered for a second. All that would do is make martyrs of them and turn every single Arab (if they weren't already) into your enemy.

Re: Another reason I voted for Bush...

Freedom of speech one of the things our forefathers died for is being slowly leeched away in todays political climate. Whether it is another country or ours we have to respect our constitutional obligations to people. The constitution is an American document, but how can we try to crush free speech in another country when we say we covet it in this one.

Although I must say our free speech is slowly being taken away...keep that in mind come election time. My two cents.
