I just heard that they have a 25% unemployment rate. That's absurd.

Re: French labor riots

And the law they're crying and being french about would help resolve some of that.
Of course if they actually wanted to attract large companies and create jobs there they would have to completely change their labor and tax laws, among other things.

Lucent is in talks with one of their cell phone providers about partnering up. Maybe that will do some good for them

The French actually work? I thought they sat around all day sipping wine and playing botchy ball.

BDA is probably right. However the French are one of the few (only?) nations that, rightly or wrongly, actually get off their arses and challenge unpopular laws. The rest of us just bitch about it in internet forums and let the laws go unchallenged.

I've seen it reported many times to be 25% too. Dunno who is right.

It is very ironic. The very thing they're protesting for, more job protections, is exactly what many people attribute the stagnation in European tech industry.

It's damn near impossible to fire someone there...so companies don't hire.

Re: French labor riots

It's the youth unemployment rate that is the issue. The 15-24 age group. It is over 20%, and this law could change that. The little whiners just don't want to have to actually prove themselves worthy of said job is all, so they riot instead.
Fukking morons.
Many other euro countries have youth unemployment rates in the same neighborhood as well, and they are all due to the socialist atmosphere.
And they are the ones thinking America's economy is gonna crash.

Re: French labor riots

Some people feel Europe/France is making these changes to hurt the US economy. In the big picture of things, we all should be siding with the students/Union.

Europe is making these changes, not so they can adopt capitalism. They are making these changes so they have leverage against the US.

Synergy, I think you ought to get out and about a bit more. Europe is quite a big and diverse place. And much to your surprise, you might find that the US is not central to any European agenda.

I think what you are trying to say, but perhaps find difficult, is that French telecoms group Alcatel is making moves to BUY Lucent.

I'm assuming by "them" you mean Lucent ?

Swedish group Ericsson is also having a look. Next in line looking at Lucent is Cisco Systems.

Really? The European Union doesn't see the United States as their primary competitor? And that various import laws in the E.U. on foods and other perishables are put in place explicitly so U.S. products can't make it to their markets?

Europe is not that big. It is actually less than 1/2 the size of the United States in geographic area. Plus Europe does not have some of the geologic wealth the U.S. has nor the agricultural capacity of the U.S. I would venture a guess that the U.S. is central to any decision being made in the E.U.
