| What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech What's the deal? I figured this place would have lit up after Bush's immigration speech. Bush is the decider. And he has decided to rehash his proposal from a few years ago. Everrybody hated it then. How about now? |

| Re: What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech The "impeachment process," should it begin, is the one thing that will definitely keep the democrats from having a chance at the White House in '08.
A better use of time and energy would be to find someone in the party who could run for the presidency without causing a national pandemic of projectile vomiting.
Where's that smilie? Ah, there it is.. |

| Re: What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech I can't say that Bush has any answers for the illegal "ALIEN" problem that we have. I'm not sure if anyone does. I was all for just rounding them up when they were publically protesting. That would have let them know how serious we are.
I personally would like to see how the National Guard is going to work out. I think if we are going to use troops though we should use a number that makes an impact. When using military force I like to think that there is no such thing as too much.
I'm not into the fence thing. Put a freakin' wall up with guard towers every 5 miles. No one says there has to be a man in the tower. The tower guards could change position every day and constantly keep the tresspassers guessing.
As for those that cross after the "Speech" the other night. I say lock em up. Don't deport them. Give an automatic 1 year sentence. After that make it 5 years. If they commit the crime again make it 25 years. By the time they get out they won't care about coming back.
What do we honestly do about those that are already here? Let's just say that I'm not for amnesty at all. If there are families with children here that have been here for a period of more than 5 years then we should see if they can pass all the requirements for becoming a citizen. If they can't then "Good-bye". Come back and visit some day. Having children here does not make you a citizen. Being born here does, but that's another story at the moment.
Well, let me go ahead and cover it while I'm ranting. If you are under the age of 18 and both parents are illegal then you get a free ride to your native homeland unless there are American parents willing to adopt the child. That's how I feel about it. Then we won't have parents saying that they have an American child. You were here illegally so I don't care.
I'm I heartless? Maybe.
If you have been here more than 5 years and want to begin the immigration process I feel you need to be fined before any paperwork starts. If you can't do it, go home.
Anyone caught with less than 5 years of work history should get a free ride home this round. After that it's back to my jail time theory. |

| Re: What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech And learn to speak English. I'm tired of seeing Spanish everywhere. If you want to speak Spanish go to a Spanish speaking Country.
Why are we helping illegals to communicate here? Learn the language. If I were to go to another Country and expected to live there I would have to learn to speak the accepted Native language.
My wife's family is German. When they go out in public I promise that they don't speak in German or French. Why not? Because it's rude. |

Where's that smilie? Ah, there it is.. | unfortunately the majority of Republicans AND Democrats are worthless on the issue of illegal aliens. Very few have anything to say that is even remotely constructive (on the good side Tancredo and Sessions come to mind).
If either party wants my vote they need to come up with some solutions that create PROGRESS. Amnesty was already tried and actually increased the problem. Further decreasing the possibilties for illegal employment is possible and would help (fail to match letters from the Social Security Administration is a start that is already on the books).

| Re: What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech Its interesting hearing all the different points of views on immigration and also Bush...I am a LEGAL immigrant myself and coming from the country I came from I may be biased on the immigration issue. I tend to be a bit more open minded than most that I encounter. I think that there should be a distinction from people that came here illegally and people that may be out of status (expired visa, etc...) but I cant really say what that distinction should be. There are so many variables.
It would be interesting to see what kind of affect on the country Customs ideas would have if they were implemented. I am not agreeing or disagreeing but it would be an interesting experiment.
I am also no fan of Bush, but I really dont understand his decision making lately. It seems that he is pushing bad ideas that even Republicans dont agree with. He doesnt have the support of his base on some issues but he still pushes on...oh well two more years until election year...

Now if someone is here on a green card, visa or other legal mechanism and overstays by a few days we should give them a warning and send them toward an office to correct the issue the first time or two. After that send them packing home. My sister in law is a LEGAL immigrant and I know what she had to do to stay in compliance. Yes it was a hassle but she did it. That is the kind of citizen we need. There is no need to import criminals we have enough of our own.
Now go home smoothrideronli and come back either legally or not at all

| Re: What, nothing praising the President's immigration speech I like the tack Bush is taking on illegal immigration.
Sorry guys, I find it really hard to see the problem you all love to say illegal immigration is.
Maybe first you could explain to me what the problem really is (do you hate Mexicans or what, with the term illegal aliens...you all really mean migrant Mexican workers) then as Bake said, give us a solution.
Because I don't see the problem some of you do, I think Bush is doing exactly what I would, be as moderate as possible to appease as many on both sides as possible.
Ironically for the oppressed jaim/deez, Bush is closer to the Demos on this issue than the conservatives... |
