Library Records Redux

Remember how librarians were up in arms because the PATRIOT act would allow law enforcement to easily obtain library records on anyone? Seems like everything went away on that, no? Well, it seems that the FBI is still doing it, but placing a gag order on every librarian involved... at least in this case...

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/31/ny...=5070&emc=eta1

My favorite excerpt:

"Mr. Christian said that he and the other leaders of library consortiums in Connecticut had discussed hiring a lawyer to lobby against provisions of the Patriot Act but had accepted government assurances that there was little risk of federal investigators seeking library records. "We trusted them but apparently we shouldn't have," Mr. Chase said, noting that his organization would continue to resist other aspects of the government's demand."

I have nothing to hide either. But after the government has your library records and such, how safe do you think that info is going to be?

Way I look at, the less people that have my information (no matter what that info is) the better. I know firsthand that small snippets of info in and of themselves are not dangerous until pieced together with other small snippets of information that can create a destructively accurate picture.

Re: Library Records Redux

Seamus, I think the idea the government can get library records is utterly appalling. (NDD knows this) Of course, I think the Patriot Act itself is disgusting too.

I have several books in my house by people like Adolf Hitler, Trotsky and others that at various times in our history could be looked at very poorly when the McCarthy-ites come calling.

You and me too! I display mine prominently and some people have told me the books make them uncomfortable. Must be an Orange County thing

If I were looking to do something "wrong", I'd definitely pay cash for my books...

On a more serious note...Congress needs to stop for a second and look behind them...'cuz they crossed the line a long time ago.
