It would seem that the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Arlen Specter, has decided that we really don't need hearings on that whole pesky NSA domestic wiretapping thing anytime soon.
Also interesting to note that Dianne Feinstein, one of the senators from our great golden state, agrees with him, and wants all further hearings to be in closed session. Funny how she is up for re-election in November.
Seems like the Senate doesn't really want to deal with a political hot potato during an election year. God forbid. This **** just makes me BEYOND pissed off. Lets forget about NSA wiretapping, sinking economy, looming energy crisis, environmental catastrophy, wars in two countries, Iran with nukes, etc. Let's instead worry about Gay Marriage. |

| Re: More 'just in time for election season' wafting My analysis: NSA Wiretapping...WHO CARES. If you have nothing to hide - who the f*** cares if they are listening. sinking economy...Stock market is swelling. People are making a fortune on their homes - money, money, money. What country are you referring to? Not this one. Any Senior in high school that took an Econ class will tell you that. Looming Energy Crisis...Yep - thanks to our dependence on foreign oil. We need foreign oil because wack jobs like Sen. Kennedy and Al Gore want to stop all oil production in Alaska and off-shore. We have enough oil to last for decades under Alaska and the ocean. But.....let's worry about that when all the other oil is gone. Then the liberals will have something MORE to bitch about. Environmental catastrophy.... ?????? Hugh?????? Wars in two countries...yep. I know....the liberals have a better idea right? Oh yeah - roll over and BEG the terrorists (who are hell bent on destroying us at ALL costs) to leave us alone or we'll sanction then through the UN. The UN...what a JOKE. Bunch of idiots.....losers.....cowards..... WORTHLESS. The UN should be DISSOLVED. Iran with nukes....see previous rant. If we were to go in and take out their nuclear capabilities...Al Gore and Sen. commie...oops...I mean Kennedy...would scream from the top of the roof that we were impeading Iran's clean, efficient, source of power. No...I'm wrong...nuclear energy is from the devil. It's deadly. Oil is better....oh yeah, oil is from the devil. It's deadly too.
Whatever....there is SO much more in life to get worked up over. There is always a tit for tat, a ying for yang. There's nothing you can do Navy - you'll be dead of a stroke if you let this sh** get to you.

The new chairman hasn't really said anything concrete since he's taken office. Rising interest rates are definitely not helping. Quote: |

Not ignoring problems like this and not getting jailed/killed/etc for doing so is one of the greatest rights we have in this country. |

I could care less about the privacy thing guys - I have NOTHING to hide...they will pass over me and to someone who DOES have something to hide...i.e. drug dealers, TERRORISTS...did I say TERRORISTS???
Global warming - I don't believe it. Prove it. Not Al Gore proof - but REAL hard evidence that that earth is indeed warming (more than usual) and the cause is DEFINITELY us.

You ride a bike, but you have never
a) sped
b) wheelied or ANY other form of illegal driving
You may laugh and say "whatever", but I know you have at least broken 65 MPH on 15. So we should have GPS on all of our cars and bikes that mail you a ticket automatically when you speed. You have nothing to hide, right? |

| Re: More 'just in time for election season' wafting That's kind of my point. The nation was founded on personal privacy, and it has been slowly eroded to where it is now.
All we need is another round of McCarthy like hearings and this will blow up. |

| Re: More 'just in time for election season' wafting Reynolds wrap?
John F. Kennedy could be giving this quote today about privacy rights: "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
The value of privacy is a core belief and intention of the Constitution. As we erode it, we literally undermine the whole concept of republican government. I don't care about gatso cameras, and GPS tattle tellers (if you have a Fast Pass tuffy, your speed is already being monitored BTW) in comparison...
Might as well go back to fascism if we're not going to care about this stuff. (Hey, no political thread is complete without a reference right?)
Economy swelling? Dude, housing prices are falling, energy costs are escalating far too quick and too high for the economy to handle, and the stock market has finally started to reflect it. The market is NOT swelling, it's in the shitter, Dow is flat for the year roughly, and NASDAQ down...and it ain't getting better anytime soon. |

There, filled that quota too.
C'mon tuffy, you served or are serving to defend this Constitution of this United States. You took an oath to defend it, as did I.
Not just the parts that apply to you or me.
I'm not a doomsayer that think this will lead to the rising of an Evil Empire, but I don't like the fact that our values - which we broadcast to the world - aren't holding as much value in recent years.
Our Freedoms should not be compromised when there are other avenues to pursue. I'm sure there are alternatives to mass wire tapping, though none come to mind right now, but may be cost or man-power prohibitive to some bean-counters in Washington.
It's almost enough for me to switch to the Democratic party, though right when I'm about to announce my 'coming out' party , they throw Hillary in '08 at me. **** and ****!

But like I told some other person a few days ago - there ARE limits to our rights. If the stability, unity, and survival of our country is at stake - i.e. terrorists calling on the destruction of the United States and actively seeking nuclear weapons to carry out such a threat - our right have GOT to take a back seat. There is NO other way. Right now - wire tapping is necessary. I don't think it's necessary for ALL Americans - but it is for "persons of interest".
You won't go Democrat. You aren't stupid. If Hillary runs - the Democrats WILL b sorry and they WILL lose - Here is my prediction:
Democrats - they'll run Joey Lieberman. He's moderate, he's Jewish, and he's more of a "hawk" than a dove. He's also VERY intelligent and well spoken.
Republicans - They'll run Rudy Guliani. He's the "hero" of 9-11. He is a moderate, he is LOVED by people of all races, genders, and parties.
That will be a GREAT race. I think Joe Lieberman (as long as he seperates himself from Gore, Clinton, and Kennedy) will win.
If the Dems run Hillary - they WILL lose. God Bless America. And....the only REAL Americans...the Republicans. (That's for NavyDEvilDoc) heheheh!!!!

| Re: More 'just in time for election season' wafting I'm a big fan of following procedure in our laws. Taking liberties to pursue change from a position of power without precedent I'm not a big fan of.
Really, the fact that there was another way to go about it shows me an irresponsibility in, if not abuse of, wielding power.
I think this excerpt from Wikepedia sums it up for me: In conclusion, the DOJ letter fails to offer a plausible legal defense of the NSA domestic spying program. If the Administration felt that FISA was insufficient, the proper course was to seek legislative amendment, as it did with other aspects of FISA in the Patriot Act, and as Congress expressly contemplated when it enacted the wartime wiretap provision in FISA. One of the crucial features of a constitutional democracy is that it is always open to the President—or anyone else—to seek to change the law. But it is also beyond dispute that, in such a democracy, the President cannot simply violate criminal laws behind closed doors because he deems them obsolete or impracticable.
I'm not personally concerned over it, it is more principal to me. We talk about our freedoms worldwide. Our President has stated "they hate us for our freedom". The thing not to do is something controversial which Americans may see as impeding our freedoms.
I know when I witness something like that- a hyprocritical act - I think the parties involved are as ****ed up as a soup sandwich.
I, as an American, don't want to be seen in this light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSA_war...ce_controversy
I hope the NSA is as narrowly focused as they state they are. Obviously, government isn't infallible and the information stored may be used for purposes other than....

And maybe, just maybe there will be some spending oversight on the monies spent in Iraq and Afghanastan. Plus it would be nice to see some investigations into Bush's no bid contracts to the Carlyle Group and who in the Bush administration is actually war profittering. |

I like the gridlock idea. I can tell you right now - they won't get the majority. They're still to far off course. They are being piloted by people who can't read a barometer or a compass.
Hoever - I would have liked more investigations into OTHER president's doings too. Investigations FAR more intersting than Bush scratching he backs of a few donators and friends. So what...they ALL do that. I want to know why Bill Clinton sold the Lincoln Bedroom to the highest bidder. I want to know why we got involved in the Serbian conflict at the EXACT time Clinton was being impeached by the House. I want to know why Ron Brown died. I want to know why Vince Foster "committed suicide"....yah right. I want to know how FBI documents ended up in the hands of Hillary Clinton. I want to know why Bill CLinton told the Saudis (who had Bin Laden) he wasn't intererested in killing him. I want to know a lot of things too......

One that cost millions in tax payers money. Instead of finding out about the things you mention the republicans wanted to know if Monica Lewinski gave a good blow job, where she gave the blow job, how she gave the blow job, and how often she gave blow jobs to the president. It almost seemed like the investigation was a device to ruin Clinton's credibility. But nahh, the republicans wouldn't use such an investigation for political gain. |
