Different states have different applications of an insanity defense, as well as differing standards of what it means to be "insane."
Some states lock you up until you are no longer a danger...But they do so in a "Hospital" so it is not considered "imprisonment;" and still other states have "Guilty, by reason of mental disease or defect" instead of not guilty by the same...
Although I am not a proponent of state-sponsored murder (the death penalty) I do agree that, if there was ever a person who deserved some punishment for actions not in conformity with acceptable standards of behavior, it is Ms. Yates. No wonder Americans keep losing faith in the Criminal Justice System...We successfully punish Bernie Goetz for defending himself, but we can't convict O.J. or Baretta of killing their wives...Crazy.
